As September starts, the days cool, evenings draw in, I thought it might be nice to try and draw a map of where club members have been this year.
I know of trips across to Ireland, the Scillies and pretty much every port in the Bristol channel, but let's try and find out the big picture of where everyone has been. My feelings are that it has been a very active cruising year this year at Cardiff Yacht Club.
Even if you've only managed a single trip to Watchet, or Portishead, let's have a look at where club members have been in total. I may even try and work out a total mileage sailed!

Chart look good Martyn. When I clicked on enlarged image though I could not get back out of it to go back to message board.
Anyway, Alana has been to Lydney Portishead (Marina & YC) Watermouth Appledore and of course to Scilly Isles via Appledore Padstow & St Ives ( I think). I think that Bright Flyer has also been to the Scillies this year, as well as the South Coast, and I also recall someone else posting on the forum recently about their trip to the Scillies.

Hope you can see the chart. I've done all of the entries to date. I'll try and improve the display after the weekend (off sailing). The chart is fully clickable, you can drag and zoom in. If you click one of the destinations you can see who has been there. Looks impressive, and a great advert for the club!

The map looks brilliant Martin.
Am I right in spotting that Vince's wallet has only been out once this year?

Thanks, Huw, it has worked out better than I expected.
Vince's wallet may actually be up for the Tony Burris distance award this year. There are few wallets I know of that could make it to the Scillies single handed, and make it back again, all by itself.

Can now add Bristol for Xanadu - if motoring half way there and back counts. Coming back went from motoring with hardly any wind, put the spinnaker up, broached a couple of times, dropped the spinnaker and 20 mins later had to go back to motoring!
Agree with others, this is a great idea and very well executed - thanks Martin.

Martin, As Mike and others have said, this is a great idea. Is it possible to move the map to a closed thread so it is always at the top and easier to access? This thread could carry on for us to add future destinations. Allan

I completely agree. In addition Martin, there are some announcements made on the message board, prior to date of happening that I feel "get lost" on the main page when others have updated posts in other threads within the same section. Would it be possible to keep some of these announcements on top? For example there is the notice about Tom Cunliffe's talk, and I also want to post a notice about Nick Jacksons inllustrated talk on 14th October, but don't want it to get lost among other messages.

I think this is a great idea and a great use of current technology.
One extra thing that could become a useful resource and be fascinating to look at would be to set up a CYC Picasa account. Then anyone who has pictures taken at the destinations visited, could post them for all to see.
If you haven't seen this facility, it enables anyone to click on a destination (e.g. Dale) and then see all the pictures that have been loaded by CYC members. This could be made private for CYC members or public to anyone. As the location of the pictures is based on GPS information, then it is not restricted to named destinations. So those dolphins you saw and photographed off Sully Island could also be entered into the CYC map.

I'd like to join in, this season I have visited and stayed at Watchet, Minehead, Porlock, Combe Martin, Watermouth, Ilfracombe, Lundy, Swansea, Oxwich, Tenby, Dale, Solva, Kilmore Quay and Waterford. I've clocked about 1200 Nm since April and I'd like to put a few more on before the season closes. Andy High Spirits.
