The first of our 2011 overnight club cruises - Portishead Quays Marina. Portishead is possibly the easiest destination for us in the Bristol Channel, a great trip for beginners and old hands alike. As Allan said last year head out to Flatholm at low water, and wait and you'll drift there (please don't take this too literally!) Meet in 'The Royal' pub (which is a few minutes walk away from the marina) for evening drinks. Portishead Quays Marina is a five gold anchors marina, with excellent facilities, see:- www.quaymarinas.com/Marinas/PortisheadQuays/For those looking for more than just a marina and a pub, Portishead boasts an outdoor swimming pool (it was warm enough when we tried it last May!), an excellent leisure centre and the town centre 10 minutes walk away. And you get 3 points towards the Blue Book Challenge. Mobos welcome - as always. Listen to VHF Ch. 77 on route. It is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the skipper to decide whether to enter or continue participating in this event, especially with regard to prevailing and forecast weather conditions. Please also ensure your vessel and it’s equipment is in a sound and seaworthy condition and that you and your crew are suitably experienced, properly prepared and clothed for adverse weather as required.

I hope that we will be able to join this one. Xanadu is booked to come out of the water for the last week of March. Provided all goes well we should be first back in on the 2nd.

Well, there's still seven weeks to go, and there are already six boats (I'll be there too!) planning to join this cruise! I think we had eleven boats last year, so hopefully we can beat that this year.
It would be great to see some new faces joining us, particularly those looking to build their experience - Portishead really is about the easiest destination there is to get to from Cardiff. And coming as part of a club cruise gives you the reassurance of having other people out there for support. The marina at Portishead is well equipped with all the facilities you could ask for - great for keeping less enthusiastic partners happy! If you got any questions this is the place to ask them.
Any mobos thinking of joining us?

Katy will be there, as she was one of the 11 last year gotta keep up the good work.
Unfortunately you won't be seeing very much of me before then as I have soooooooooo much work to do. As some of you know I sell camping equipment on the internet and this is the time of year when the manufacturers bring out all the new models for the forthcoming season. I've got about a thousand pictures to get together, a thousand descriptions to write and a thousand sets of technical specs to 'lift' from the manufacturer's brochures.
I was a bad boy and didn't do it last year. I couldn't bear watching Allan and co. departing whenever the fancy took them and was tempted to join in. I can resist anything except temptation, so behaved as if I was retired - and am now paying the price. Just about everything on the website is obsolete. Half of it isn't even available any more! So I gotta knuckle down and revamp the whole thing before I go bankrupt!!!!
Will try to pop in occasionally though. Being the proud owner of a virginal fishing rod I must attend the 'fishing for yotties' talk so that I can find out what to do with it!! And get those BB points for the best dinner caught and photographed over Easter!
Julian.

Hopefully Cassandra will be there ..hopefully with Peter, Elaine, Karen.. on board. COME ON THE SPRING!
(I see you're up late Julian! - where's the link to your site on here then? Camping stuff generally makes much cheaper boating stuff than "boat" stuff!)

I too am hoping to make the first cruise of the year on Gofa I had an enjoyable evening at PCC dinner and dance last weekend and mentioned the forthcoming cruise.
They are more than happy to lay something on at the club house at Pill if we would like it, failing that maybe some of their members may join us in the pub

Ray, I'm not sure of the location of their club house, and therefore the logistics involved in getting there from the marina??? And it would mean the possibility of more BB points!
Either way it would definately be good to meet up with some PCC members.

Huw, the club house is at Pill. In the past, when we have gone to the PCC "regatta" evening, the club has kindly laid on a minibus to take us to and from the Marina.
If it is decided to do something at the club house, then some of us might even decide to anchor outside the club in the river, I know Allan was thinking of it.

Further to Ray's earlier post, Portishead Cruising club have offered to put on a meal at their clubhouse for us and minibus to get us there. Should be a great evening, others who have attended PCC events in the past have always commented on the excellent hospitallity they've been shown.

Do we need to be making a list of how many boats & individuals will be making this trip, for numbers for catering at Portishead CC, berthing in the marina (if there are loads going we maybe ought to let Portishead know in advance to make sure there are enough berths for us) and also for the transport from marina to the clubhouse?

I intend to call the marina closer to the time - I know that last year they appreciated the call, there's plenty of space there, but with a bit of notice they can put us all in the same area.
As for numbers for PCC - I intend to get a list together by mid March.

Well it's mid March, so to start off your list for the Portishead Cruising Club Huw, there will be 3 crew aboard Katy. Myself (Skipper), Karen Morgan (First Mate) and Mick Ray (Cabin Boy). :-)
We had a really good night at the PCC on their Regatta day last year. Let's hope this will be as much fun!
Julian.

Thanks Julian, could everyone else planning to attend post here to give me an idea of numbers please. Obviously I realise that the weather will be a big factor for most of you, but a list of fair weather attendees would be helpful.
