Hi, everyone. As you may know, our sailing sec and committee has come up with a great idea to get people out there visiting other clubs and locations in the Bristol Channel this year, and Sheila Parker-Brown has kindly donated a lovely trophy for the person who wins te challenge. I've created a site where the details, and current positions can be seen. More details to follow. I think that this could become a difficult one. The aim of the challenge is to 'fly the CYC flag around the BC', which is why yacht clubs earn you more points than marinas. However, NDYC is not just round the corner, and you went on a Friday/Saturday when you could quite reasonably have expected it to be open. So I think the fairest thing to do is to give you 1 point.
This puts Chausey in joint 1st place, with Alana and Runagane.

After hours of trying to upload this photo to Photobucket via aol finally gave up and remembered to try Mozilla Firefox! Instant success, I must remember that. Anyhow guys & gals, here is a photo of the soon to be highly desired trophy, I will take it for safe keeping in the club from tonight. Happy Bristol Channel yachting everyone!

If Allan can be cheeky enough to ask if a 'non' visit counts for any BB points I will too! I hid in Barry to shelter from some horrific gales on my return journey from the Easter trip. I couldn't visit Barry Yacht Club because annoyingly the tide was out during beer hours and I couldn't get ashore - but I did use their moorings..... does that count for anything?
Incidentally, if anyone with a fin who also has the Peter Cumberlidge Pilot book has been put of visiting Barry because of his description I can correct what might seem like a minor error, but in fact makes a huge difference to us fin owners. He describes the Barry Yacht Club moorings as drying to HARD mud - something a fin will avoid like a visit from the Mother-in-Law - but in fact I now know from experience that it dries to SOFT mud. The fin sinks in and the boat remains upright just like Weston or Burnham. It is perfectly OK for fins to vist.
I'll copy the above to the pilotage section...
Julian.

Julian, thanks for that info, both as forum admin, and as a fin keel owner.

Chausey and Bright Flyer went to Thornbury sailing club and Lydney harbour, the yacht club was closed but we did have the use of the toilets, does that count? No towing this weekend! Allan

For the first time since about February Allan is not leading the Blue book challenge - Martyn and Sarah on Bright Flyer are. So this weekends BB regatta bonus points could be really important! Don't forget there's 5 points for every boat that enters, plus 3 for the winner, 2 for second and 1 for third!

Please add points for Ardua for Lundy and Watchet. Does Ilfracome count as we took Ardua back from there?

The rules don't say anything about it being a return journey so yes Ilfracombe counts. Did you visit the YC there at all (excellent showers!)? Could you give me a date for each visit please Duncan?
Allan - forgot to answer your question fully earlier - no on this occasion there's no points for the closed YC! I think you've used your quota of generosity with the points, especially when you're so close to the top of the table!
As a general note for anyone wanting to claim their points - please supply a date for each place you visit and let me know whether you visited the local YC (whilst it was open!).

I dod not visit any of the club but met many of the members at Ilfracombe whils working on Ardua. Ilfracombe left on the 26th April. Lundy on 15th of April (with High Spirits). Watchet on 16th April.

I suspect you meant May or the last two dates! And you were in Swansea with us on the Easter Holiday weekend (22-24th April) so surely you left Ilfracombe before the 26th?

Sorry, forgot to report back on here - after discussing with Brian King we don't think anyone, myself included, caught anything that stood out. So we're going to extend it to be the best fishing photo of the Summer that will win.

Apologies for the delay - a busy month or so for me. I think I've now fully updated the Blue book website, please let me know if I've missed anything. I'm away sailing for a couple of days from tomorrow, but will sort on my return. See:- greyreef.co.uk/bluebook/FullList.asp and click your boat name for your full points breakdown.

Last Sunday, after Vince had spent most of the morning up the mast, we went out for a pleasure sail and to trial some of the jobs Vince had done to remedy some of the teething troubles. Also it was the first time that I had seriously handled the boat, with her engine at least twice as powerful as Alana's had been. Decided to get some more Blue Book points we headed over to Barry harbour & YC in company with Bright Flyer & Gem. I had passed my camera to Sarah on Bright Flyer with the request that she take some pics of our new boat, and Dave on Gem also took some pics for us. It was quite a bit friskier out in the channel than we had anticipated, and in an email to me Dave wrote: "After taking the pics we sailed off & once clear of the Ranie we got a strong wind. Unprepared, none of us had oilies on! Gem took off on a close reach with spray everywhere (I didn’t have the sprayhood panels in place). Exciting though, we hit 16.6. kts max. All 3 of us were wet but grinning. We reached back across to Barry, smooth in the harbour & easy sail back under jib alone at 7 kts." Indeed after Gem had passed us on the photo run, they turned about and suddenly they were gone. It was like watching a train steaming ahead of us! We had a bit of a problem with our genoa sheet jammed in the winch, so we finished by motoring in to Barry. Martyn, Sarah, Tilly & Vince went ashore to the Yacht Club, while I, being chicken, did not fancy the climb up the wall so stayed on anchor watch. It was really blowing even in the shelter of the harbour. You can just see Sarah dressed in white climbing up the embankment. martyn then came back for Vince and they all went and enjoyed a pint in the club, Tilly was also welcomed in the club. Martyn Sarah & Tilly on their way back. Once everyone had returned we then waited for the tide to turn before heading back to Cardiff. Meanwhile we were listening to a Mayday call from a 22ft yacht that had been knocked down and lost its rudder over at Tail Patch. All was well in the end, the Weston life boat came out and towed them back to Portishead. It really was pretty windy and we all sailed back on genoa alone, and we too were making 7 knots and more at times. So Huw, Blue book points please for Bright Flyer & Volition for visiting Barry YC, and for Gem at Barry.

Points added for Volition and Bright Flyer for trip to Barry YC. From what I understand from your report Gem saild to Barry and then turned for home without stopping or going ashore, and therefore no points are awardable - is this correct?
Allan, have given you your 2 points for your visit to NDYC, however, I've deleted your 1 point from your earlier visit when they were closed, as only the highest scoring visit of the year earns you points (rule 6) - so you're up one point. You do seem to be trailing a bit though - for someone who claimed to have the trophy in the bag at it's inception! ;D
Can't believe that's the only updates since 11th July? (BTW - all the Jackson's Bay BBQ points have been done).
