It's become tradition to have a CYC New Years Sail around Flat Holm. However, this years tides have made 2nd January a more popular choice.
Tides Cardiff, 2nd January (Sunday):- 05:08 10.4m 11:24 2.9m 17:34 10.5m
The plan is to lock out at 09:30 on 2nd January and sail around Flat Holm and back.
Taking part will earn you 2 points towards the new Blue Book Challenge Trophy!
It is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the skipper to decide whether to enter or continue participating in this event, especially with regard to prevailing and forecast weather conditions. Please also ensure your vessel and it’s equipment is in a sound and seaworthy condition and that you and your crew are suitably experienced, properly prepared and clothed for adverse weather as required.

Moonshine needs her engine stripped down (never run it when its full of ice, oops) so shes out of action until I get to work on it in Jan. If anyone needs extra crew I'd love to join you! Catherine

The tidal stream will be like water, moving from left to right or right to left, depending on which way you are facing! The passage plan for Chausey will be as usual. out of the barrage, around one or two Holms, back to the bar. Sorted. Allan

what is the tidal stream going to be like? as I intend to do a passage plan Rob - Surely if, as you stated above, you've got the charts and you've got Day Skipper level knowledge, then you can use the tide times I've given above to calculate the streams from the tidal diamonds??? Normally though the skipper does the passage planning, so I'd check with whoever has agreed to take you out, whether yours is required! Also as Allan has suggested there is not a lot to plan, the departure time suggested (to be checked by each skipper to ensure it's a suitable time for his/her boat) should ensure you have the stream with you for almost all the trip, so the only real navigational decision remaining is whether to round Flat Holm in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction; a decision usually based on the wind direction, wind strength, sea state and the tidal situation as you're approaching the island - so not something to decide days in advance. That said, any skipper is well advised to run through the 7 parts of a SOLAS passage plan, to ensure a trouble free trip. Item 4 on the list is particularly worthy of attention!

I'm going with Tim, Huw, But he has asked me to do the navigation side, I was using Tidal Diamond G which is near the South Cardiff Cardinal Buoy and the Rate is quite high 3.0 kts I'm basing it on a Spring tide though not neaps, does anyone have the tidal almanac for the bristol channel, I will be down thurs night as I've 2 weeks off from cadets. and me and tim will be doing a passage plan using the charts

does anyone have the tidal almanac for the bristol channel Here's the required page:- Ignore the bits I've written in - they were from a previous trip. A 3 knot stream is not unusual, though as you can see from the range we're not on springs.

Apologies:- correction to earlier post - the tide times I gave at the top were for Cardiff, you'll need Avonmouth times for the streams ideally:-
Tides Avonmouth, 2nd January (Sunday):- 0517 10.9m 1154 3.0m 1746 11.0m

Any update on the condition of the bay? Is it still frozen over? There's still icy patches, but mostly broken up. Most boats are accessable.

For those new to CYC trips we usually all use VHF ch. 77 for chat, banter and abuse!
I'm in work in the afternoon so probably won't make it round Flat Holm, though will prob come out for a quick hours sail if there's enough wind to get Camelot going (need a good enough short sail to make it worth my while replacing the anti-freeze in my raw water cooling). If not I'll probably just head to the barrage/pier and take a few photos.

Hope you all enjoy the festivities today. I've had man flu, and been in bed for the last two days. Louise had a milder version - she's managed to be up and about, getting things for me and so on. Good job her cold wasn't as bad as mine.
I can't wait to get out for a sail again. It feels like many months since we did anything.
Anyway, enjoy, all, and happy new year. See you all soon.
