I will decide my plans later in the week. I may think of heading down to Ilfracombe. We will have to see what the weather is doing. Allan

I don't think Sandpiper can make it this weekend - Elaine's busy, so I haven't got any crew. ..also got a concerning engine vibration that needs investigating A few tips: the tides are STRONG up there! 5-6knots at mid tide - we can't go against that. So don't get swept past or you won't get back! Best plan is to get close in from around Clevedon and hug the coast - this will also keep you out the way of the tankers intent on running you down. having said that - if you're not leaving Cardiff till mid-day, you'll be up at Portishead at LW, so the tide'll be slack - But you won't be able to get into Portishead for another 3hrs or so. They open about 3 1/2 hrs each side of HW. Give them a call - they are friendly and helpfull. Good facilities in the marina too cheers, Peter

A further thought -
in fact i don't think you'll get anywhere east at all untill almost low water (which I have as 1559 at Bristol). Then you can be up at Portishead to catch one of the first locks in ..it'll be dark though. I haven't done it in the dark, but its probably well lit.
wishing you fair winds - and tides, Peter

Fingers crossed on the weather. Yesterday there was going to be a low over us, giving winds over 30 knots. Today, it looks further North, with winds at 20ish, so I'll be keeping an eye.

Yeah, we are aware of the strong tides and know that we won't be able to get into Portishead until around 6 ish. Thought about going over to Weston or Sand Bay and poodling around there for a bit then coming back up more with the tide later. But as with everything, will probably have a Plan B! (Not that Plan B has been thought about just yet!)

I have been into Portishead in the dark and it is not too much of a problem. If you are arriving for an early lock there will be a strong tide taking you past the end of the wall. As you head for the lock, before you get to the end of the wall you wil be grabbed by a back eddy which will take you back toward Clevedon. The transition is quite dramatic, so the bow can be in the outgoing eddy when the stern is being taken by the incoming tide. It just needs a little thought, as long as you can see the lock gates and their lights, you wont have a problem. Allan

I'm hoping to join you mid evening with Angie. I'm boating in Pembroke during the day so plan to blat accross under power when I get back, join you for the evening, and sail back with you in the morning. Babysitter all sorted, just need decent weather and hassle free journey back from Pembroke (still running in new engine in car).

Good stuff, Huw. Weather looks much better now than it did earlier in the week.
