A few of you have mentioned that a club trip to somewhere sandy for a BBQ would be a good idea - after some discussion in the bar the plan is to sail to Jackson's Bay (Barry), anchor and go ashore for a BBQ on the beach. As many of us were away during August, 26th Sept was suggested.
The plan is to lock out at midday (HW) and sail to Jacksons Bay. All bring a disposable BBQ and food. I'll tow my dinghy, though it would be helpful if someone else were to bring one too. It will be a neap tide so the mud at the bottom of the beach won't be too bad (top half of beach is sand).
Plan B if weather is poor would be a visit to Barry YC (which may also suit those reluctant to anchor).
Mobos welcome.

Called in at Barry Yacht Club on Sunday. Talking to Nick Phillips (Hon Secretary) about our proposed trip and the Plan B (to call in at the Yacht Club). the Yacht Club is only open on Sunday mornings, and does Sunday lunch - closes in the afternoon.
Nick Phillips said that if we like we can arrange to use their barbecue, which is under cover (much like where ours is I think - under a balcony.) He says to bring our own charcoal. He also says that if there are enough of us he could arrange for the bar to remain open for us.
Huw, do you want to make further enquiries?
See also my post in the Learning & Training Section of the forum.

The original plan of a BBQ on the beach (your's I believe Sheila) would, I think be more enjoyable if we have a glorious Summer day. However, the chances are the weather will be less than glorious!! So it may well be the best option.
Though having aranged to go to Barry YC and had them open their bar, we can't very well bin that idea and go to the beach just because the weather is good! So we need to decide in advance. What does everyone think?? Use the poll above to vote for your choice.

Oops, I got my dates a bit wrong. The BBQ plan is for the Saturday 26th isn't it, and I was talking to Nick Phillips about the Sunday 27th. So don't know what Barry YC opening hours are on Saturdays, I think it is open all day Saturday. In which case we could stick to the original plan of BBQ on the beach and combine a walk up the hill for a swift half in Barry YC after! We should have a rough idea of what the weather might be doing around a week beforehand so could make a final decision then.
Sorry about that.

Ah that explains it - I was sure when I went there on a Saturday it was open - it was a few years ago though.

Re the chances of good weather - well I can confirm that last year 15th September was a lovely day, and 20th September was a fantastic day, very hot and sunny. So there is no reason why it will necessarily be horrid!

Yes, count Andrea in, but we need a crew - Wissit's away but Paul could take a couple of willing hands with him. We all know about our anchoring exploits from Flatholm - must be better this time . . .

26th Sept is Barry Brains TV race. Used to be the biggest race in the Channel.
We also hope to cruise to both Bristol & Burnham before season ends (ouch!). Yet to set dates.
Anyone interested in joining in?

Looks like the beach BBQ is the more popular option for the 26th - which is possibly just as well if Barry have a race on - 87.5% is good enough for me.
It's good to see we have a club full of optomists!!! Let's hope the weather doesn't let us down!

A few of you have asked questions about where is safe to anchor in Jacksons Bay. I went there today and took some photo's at low water to show the underwater hazards (it was springs so water was much further out than it will get at LW on sat - not that we'll be there then). See my post in the Pilotage notes section. I also thoroughly researched the place on Saturday night when we camped there. This is me letting off a chinese flying lantern. I may bring one this weekend if the wind direction is right.

The forecast is looking good for Saturday with a High Pressure system giving temperatures of 18 degrees and winds of 3 knots from the North. Better make sure there is petrol in our engines just incase the wind dies. I guess everyone is using VHF channel 72 for radio chatter? Will see you all down there.

Those were the first lanterns we've had, they were great fun for the kids though, I've got two left so I may bring them if the wind is right.
The intention is to stay clear of the mud!!!!

If the forecast light winds are correct it should be the perfect day for the mobos, not so go for us raggies though. That said it should be a good social. If the weather is kind we'll have to have a sand castle competition!!!

I'm in on this - Wissit's away but Peter and Elaine will crew. I'm assuming 12.00 lockout. I think Vince and Sheila are carting our little fibreglass dinghy. Any food-related details?
See you all tomorrow, Best, Paul

Just thought I would mention it but adding the daylight saving low water will be at 17.49 - 3.9 meters.
See you all tomorrow. Should be a good day out!

Paul, For food bring whatever you fancy and if possible a disposable/portable BBQ or sandwiches or other picnic type thing. Basically whatever you like!
Fergie mac - sorry you can't make it see you another time.
Matt - Yes we will communicate on VHF Ch. 72 as usual.
As for tide if you look at the photos I put on the pilotage forum the height of tide at that time was 0.8m, and as we have 3.9 at the lowest point, if you anchored around where the water line is in the photo you'd have 3.1m at low water tomorrow.
I plan to come in quite a bit closer than that, to tuck into the bay and be out of any swell, and leave about an hour before low water. There's no point leaving too early as we'd only be fighting the tide to get back to Cardiff.
My personal technique is to work out how much water I want at the lowest point during the duration of my stay (about 2m if there's not too much swell) then as I arrive I have a quick look at the tidal curve in the almanac to find the current height of tide and how much it will fall from the current height by my departure time. I then add the amount the tide will fall to my 2m (perhaps with a bit extra to be sure) and sail into the anchorage until my sounder shows that depth, and anchor there. It works well - quite reliably at my departure time there is 2m (plus any allowed extra) showing on te sounder exactly as planned.

Sorry to hear about your boy Huw, hope he is okay.
It was much appreciated that your organised this outing, we had great weather and a nice little wind too (suprisingly). The tips on the pilotage page meant that we all huddled on the middle to Eastern side but as there was a race on at Barry we had to come in closer but this was fine. Thanks to Vince for doing taxi duty.
This is the first time we have anchored and rowed ashore before so it was a good first experience.
Thanks all.

Excellent trip - sorry Huw couldn't make it and I hope your lad is ok. We (Peter, Elaine and me) motored down and anchored in about 4.5m at 1.15pm, had sandwiches on board and left about 2.30 for a sail, which was surprisingly easy - wind about force 4 on the port quarter, so we broad reached and gybed our way back. Only moment of excitement was just past Sully Island finding the boom slider holding the kicker and inhaul had broken - when did that happen? The sort of thing you'd notice immediately, you'd think. Just missed the 5.45 lock in - very crowded - got the 6.15.
I didn't know that anchorage before and will certainly use it again. Ideal in those conditions. Paul

Thanks to everyone we met at the BBQ yesterday, it was a really lovely trip and the weather could not have been better. Thanks to Huw for organising it and thanks too to Vince for his job as ferryman. Here are some pictures that we took on the day.
