I noticed recently on a photograph on the Hunter 19 forum (which is what i sail) that someone had reefing ties left on the sail - presumably permanently,,,they appeared to be secured by a simple overhand knot either side of the reefing eye and just left dangling ready for use when needed. Has anyone come across this before? It seems like a good idea but i was wondering about chafing of the sail from the ties constantly swinging back and forth in the wind when the sail is not reefed.

I have exactly the same set-up on my Colvic Countess 28 - there doesn't appear to be any chafe, come and have a look sometime if you like.

Although I have sailed on Camelot and remember the reefing ties I can't remember exactly what they are like. I had them on one reef on my previous boat and was told the following by a French sailmaker. Make sure the ropes are soft and stay soft. Don't knot the ends. Ensure the knots either side of the sail are close to the sail. All this is to ensure there is no chaffing. I hope this helps. Allan

Can't remember if it was you Allan, but I do remember someone asking why my tell-tales were so big!
