Galion 22 – Dark Crusader
Price: £1500 (ono)
Location: Cardiff Bay Yacht Club (CBYC)
Description – Ready to sail away
Dark Crusader, a Galion 22 designed by Ian Hannay is often described as a mini offshore cruiser. With her very strong build, long encapsulated fin keel and large overlapping sails she points very well and can handle bad weather with ease. This is significantly assisted by the 50% ballast ratio which adds to her stability and stiffness characteristics.
We have owned her since March 2009 and are only selling to buy a bigger boat. During that time we have sailed her in and around Cardiff and the upper Bristol Channel. She can be sailed single handed, and is great fun with a crew of two or a small family of 2 adults and 2 children. The location is Ideal for people living within 50 – 10 miles radius of Cardiff, what better way to start sailing, having Cardiff Bay as nursery sailing ground before straying in the big blue (or rather brown) yonder.
For a boat of her age the interior is still in good condition with all her cushions having been renewed/replaced about 4 years ago. Indeed, for such a small boat her interior layout works very well and we have had many a long weekend on her with 2 adults, 2 children and the dog!
We have also refurbished the cooker/gas supply, refitted one of the windows and started to replace some of the vinyl hull lining.
We take her out the water and re-anti foul her every other year. The original inboard has been replaced by a modern 4 stroke outboard engine; easy to maintain, can be removed for maintenance or lifted if fowled by a rope or net. The original engine bay is now used for very handy extra storage. All the external wood is well maintained and running rigging is closely inspected and replaced as required. All the sails are removed, inspected and cleaned every year too.
In short, for a boat of her years you will not be disappointed and she is ready to sail.
The electrics are in reasonable condition and she benefits from a relatively new battery. However, there are a couple of defects: The Clipper mast head wind mast head unit needs replacing and a switch on one of the fuse panels is not working.
