This article may be of interest to anyone who has a VHF IC-M411type radio.
I have an Icom VHF IC -M411 type radio on Coracle, which was fitted when I bought her. On a couple of trips to various places and complaints that I never keep in contact on club trips over the last few months, which finally came to a head when taking Coracle to Dale for a few weeks.
The fault in question was that if I used my hand held radio on board or someone was very close to us, in transmit and receive mode.
I noticed on the trip to Dale I did not hear any weather or any incoming messages from channel 16 for the whole trip.
I contacted Huw on Camelot via hand held at the later stages of the trip via hand held and mobile and carried out various test. He confirmed that he was receiving me loud and clear but unfortunate I was not receiving his messages. But if I used my hand set I could hear the message being transmitted.
Thinking my set up on the radio was wrong, I contacted I-com Technical Services and explain the symptoms to the engineer.
I was pleased to hear this is a recognised fault on this type set. He called the scenario "Deaf on receive, which I-com were prepared to repair and replace the faulty component free of charge for any set of this type - no matter if the set was out of warranty.
I sent my set off , and had it returned with a report saying that I-com have replaced the receive filter - clean up, as well as Full functional check of the set free of charge.
I have not, as yet refitted the set but I am sure it will be fine.
To say I am pleased with the out come is an under statement.
Especially as the set has come back with a clean bill of health and looking like brand new at no cost other than my return postage.
Well done I-com!!!!!
;D
