I've just hoisted the sails on my new aquisition of a 22' Achilles Sparta. After fitting the sails into the groove on the mast, both jib and mainsail, I had great difficulty in pulling on the sheets to get the sails aloft. The sails did eventually get there, but it was with a great deal of heaving and sweat! I thought at one point that the rope was going to break under the strain.
My experienced helper seemed to think that the problem was with the pulleys themselves being somewhat corroded, inside the mast itself and maybe at the top. This would seem to imply taking the mast down for inspection or maybe a good dose of the old standby of WD40 liberally applied into the grooves.
Is there a simple solution to this, or does it really mean the hassle of removing the mast and trying to sort it out that way? If the latter, is there a company that can do this close at hand, and at reasonable cost?

We just had the same problem traced to a missing masthead sheave. Must have broken and disappeared at some time so we were straining to haul over the pin alone.
Andy Freemantle (07897 252736) replaced it for us using the crane at Cardiff Marine. From my experience always good for all rigging work and reasonable.

PS Just in case I gave the wrong impression that you need to lift out, the crane is a small one designed for mast work; you just moor alongside.

Now that sounds very promising, number14. I'll definitely look into that and let you know how it works out.

I agree with everything number 14 says. WD40 is not the best thing for the grooves. Silicone is the best thing. Don't buy from a chandlery! Allan

Try using the topping halyard to hoist the sail

I would certainly endorse what has been said of Andy Fremantle he has just finished work on Ardua and was very reasonable and capable.

Did you sort out the problem hoisting the mainsail.
