I've been interested in short wave radio for a while, after speaking to a transatlantic sailor who kept in contact with other sailors, sent emails and received weather faxes whilst well out of range of any other sources. His radio cost nearly £3k, but I found out that you can receive weather info, and listen to these radio nets via a cheap and cheerful £50 short wave radio. Something like this would have been very useful to Brian and Sue in their travels. This afternoon, after messing about and reading for over a year, I managed to get this: It's an Atlantic chart for Saturday, 12:00 UTC, or (as it was at the time), 12:00 today +48. With wifi, Internet and 3G mobile phones, this kind of info is widely available now, and with a lot less hassle than it takes to do it this way. If, however, you travel outside of the range of these other sources, it could be very useful indeed. This comes from a weather broadcast in Frankfurt, by the way, and I know it can be received in the Med. I'm happy to post how to do it (or, as I only know one way, how I did it!), here, or, when my leg gets better, maybe bring the radio to the club and try and show people there one evening? Let me know if there is any interest.
