Thought it might be useful to put a copy of these notes (prepared by Idris at CBYC) here:
THE EASE GUIDE TO OOD
The night before check the weather forecast. This will give you some idea what to expect on the day!
On the day arrive a good hour before the start.
Collect OOD kit from Idris or nominated club member.
Take a minute or two to view the bay for wind direction other users and possible hazards.
Check start line boat: fuel, ground tackle, cooling water coming out of engine?
Position start line boat to give best possible windward leg (use burgee in kit
Choose number of laps and display appropriate lap number board on starboard side.
Communicate with safety boat crew to lay course (use burgee in kit to determine course) lay start line last (less chance of wind shifting before start)
List all boats racing (you could do this as boats finish first lap). List of regular race boats in OOD kit.
FLAGS AND THE START:
If you think you may start late host postponement flag AP plus two blasts on horn in good time ( long red-white flag) then lower one minute before class flag go’s up with one blast. Host class flag plus one blast start stop watch five minutes to start. Four minutes host flag P (white square on blue back ground) one blast. One minute P flag down one blast. Start class flag down one blast start second watch for finish times. If second fleet host class flag repeat above. (first fleets start is second fleets five minute)
If no boat has passed mark “1” within 15 minutes of the start, the race will be abandoned. Use flag N then 3 blasts.
Log times of each boat after each lap.
THE FINISH:
when the first part of the finishing boat crosses the line one blast take time.
After race make sure that start line boat is clean and tide and moored correctly, report any defects to Idris or nominated club member. Return OOD kit with finish time sheet filled in a manner that clear and ease to understand.
REALLY USEFUL EXTRA TIPS!
RECALLS:
Individual host flag X (blue cross white background) one blast call sail number.
General recall flag 1st substitute (small yellow triangle on blue triangle) two blasts. The warning signal (restart race) will be made one minute after the removal one blast to restart.
To shorten course host flag S (blue square-white background) with class flag of fleet you wish to shorten. two blasts on horn. Do this when the first boat reaches the last mark before the finishing line.
Abandonment host flag N ( blue-white check) three blast on horn.
Always have flags ready to host
If you get a large number of boats approaching the finish at the same time take the minute that they will all finish in, then all you have to do is to take down the second they finish (example: 47 mins. 10/ 12 / 14/ 17/21 secs.)
Take boat sail numbers at first lap, much better than trying to do it before the start!
SAFETY BOAT
USE THIS BOAT ECONOMICALLY DON’T WASTE FUEL!
Before launch: check boat is seaworthy, are the bungs in? Kill cord? Fuel? Outboard in fully down position? Vent open on fuel tank? Cooling water check flow at rear of engine? Safety kit onboard? Anchor –buoy-line? First aid kit? Fire extinguisher? Tow line? Rescure knife? After use return to storage place check boat is seaworthy / report any defects to Idris or nominated club member. Return safety kit.
