My engine has overheated and seized. Volvo Penta MD11C.
Inlet strainer, impeller, thermostat, oil level are all fine.
I noticed water dripping from the back of the pump after it had stopped - seals? When I checked impeller and thermostat, there was no water there as I took them apart..? Is that normal?
Any idea how to unseize? I was planning on removing the injectors and squirting some penetrating oil in.. Further dismantling and rebuilding is, I fear, well behond me.
Any ideas, help, advice.. much appreciated!
Cheers, Peter

Peter, Can I suggest that you post this on the YBW forum as well? It has a much wider readership and there are some good mechanical types there. If it was me I'd perhaps wait and get some advice before squirting anything into the engine. To me, it sounds fine, but I'm no mechanic, and I'd hate to see you do something which could make the problem worse in the long run. www.ybw.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/Cat/0/C/1

Well if you think about it, even if you get the engine turning again would you just fill up with fuel and start using it knowing you may have a defect engine? I perhaps not, surly you would take the engine out of the boat and get it overhauled knowing you have a top bit of kit when underway. So my advise would be to do that, and get an engineer to overhaul the engine and check all components rather than guess the possible problems.
Good Luck

Thanks for the advice guys I would love to take the engine out and have it thouroughly checked / overhauled - or preferably replaced. Unfortunately my wallet says otherwise. I will just have to learn myself (with help from these forums etc.) YBW and others have loads of info. too. Latest developments: have removed injectors (they didn't look too hot - all sooted up), sprayed plenty of WD40, replaced ...and managed to turn and start it ! However, there is now no water flow at all . Scince getting home, I wonder if I put the impelloer back the wrong way round - but I don't think so. I have also removed exhaust manifold to check for blockages. There's certainly loads of crud in there, but it doesn't look blocked. returning for a moment to its original symptoms. I had just replaced oil / filter. I used 15/40 (as recomended and provided by the Volvo dealer). The manual says 10winter / 20summer. Anybody any thoughts here? The oil light was probably on for approx. 10 mins before it stopped - appeared to be plenty of water flow during that time. Is it more likely to be an oil system problem or a cooling problem? - surely it can't be 2 seperate problems developed at the same time? ...anyway I'm off to the club for the work party - maybe see some of you there.... Cheers, Peter

hi sorry to here about your engine it may be wise to check the water in take on your hull as this may be blocked with mussel preventing water from reaching your pump and alowwing the pump to run dry hope this helps regs kevin

I haven't checked the water inlet from the outside yet - but I have taken the top off the filter and opened the seathingya bit - there's certainly a reasonable amount of water coming in.
I think the overheating was far more likely to be due to lack of oil pressure - the light was on for about 10 mins before it started complaining and I shut it down. The temperature only shot up in the last 30secs. or so. I've been told that this sounds like big end trouble.
Anyway, I'm still investigating...
Anybody got spare parts for this engine? - or even the whole engine?

I've located a couple of possible 2nd hand engines. Anybody got an idea of how much they should be worth? Both have been recently run (removed, working last season)

helo draycott - I sent you a personal message -did you get it?
can you tell me what condition this engine is in. Was it running / did it run before you decided to take it out? Did you just want something newer and more reliable?

Hi. I found this old thread while searching for information about replacing my rather old and tired Volvo MD11c for a Volvo 2003. I noticed that someone else here was going to attempt this in a Centaur. Anybody know how complicated this is likely to be? Will the shaft & prop be compatible? Any adjustment required to the engine bed?
