Tide - Cardiff Sunday 1st January 2012 0543 3.4m 1152 9.9m 1809 3.6m
Monday 2nd January 2012 0017 9.4m 0631 3.9m 1243 9.3m 1903 4.1m
As you can see from the tide times above, it may not be ideal for some boats to round Flat Holm, as has become the tradition, on either day (we usually do it over a low tide).
With adequate wind Camelot could make it against these smallish tides without issue, however, other boats may not.
What do you all think? Go for Flat Holm against the tide? Go for an evening sail over LW round Flat Holm? Or suggest an alternative route for our day sail?
Once we've had the result of the vote for the date of the sail, I'll put up another poll to choose the best of the suggestions received here - so let's have them!

Huw, it all sounds like fun! Chausey will be there almost whatever is planned. The only thing that may be a problem would be a late, low tide sail on Monday. Can I suggest a high tide sail up channel and back, avoiding the sandbanks of course! Allan

Would a trip to Newport YC be feasible if they are going to be open on either day?

For the Boxing day +! race could we go out into the channel? In light of the lost mast a couple of races ago and the boats damaged in last weeks bay race I think it is too dangerous in the bay. Allan PS, same applies to the regatta.

We had a nice sail around the Holms, so missed all the excitement. Do tell what happened.

I think a Flatholms is a no no with the tide about three hours sail Newport five hours with a pint at the bar if open. How about a "cans" sail? Lock out at 09 30 or10 00am start at Penarth orange buoy, Outer Wrack, North Cardiff, Mid Cardiff, Outer Wrack,Home: time about 3 hours and back to the Club for a pint and bit of food. VIV.

Well it looks like Monday 2nd January has won. So are there any more suggestions for where to sail? I'll give it a few days to see if there are any more ideas and then I'll put a poll up to choose (after checking whether Newport will be open).

How about we go out of the Barrage at a sensible time, put up sails and turn left. At high tide we all turn around and head back to the bar? Anyone who wants to be competitive can head for the bar with a note of how many miles they managed. As usual I will be zeroing my GPS ready for the start of the year. Allan

No, don't know of a plan as yet. Further to your earlier post Allan, and as also mentioned in the club, zero GPS for the start of the year, and then, in addition to the Blue Book Challenge we could look at most mileage for the year as another competition/prize!

I have just looked at NUSC web site. They are having dinghy Frostbite #5 on Monday 2 Jan starting 09.15 from their club. The club will be open until about 14.30.
If we go we need to phone the commodore, Andrew Creighton and let him know.
What do we think? Also looks a bit frisky weatherwise!

I think NUSC would be the ideal destination with the tides we have on the day, however, I've been holding back suggesting it as the weather may well make this uncomfortable, particularly on the return.
I now think Allan's suggestion about just heading east until around the time of HW and then retuning may be better. Ideas/constructive comments?

At present, Windguru www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=6459 is giving some pretty good speeds from the west. It my be a good day to head south and then turn round. Even with the tide it may be a bit of a slog back down the channel into the wind. Can I suggest we all get together and decide on Monday morning, before we leave? Allan

On second thoughts - I agree lets decide on the day, meet at 09:00 on the benchs below the clubhouse flag pole. We can decide where we're going, who would like to take their boats and who would like to crew for someone there, sort ourselves out, and lock out at 10:00.
Maybe we can make use of the extra wind and round Flat Holm against the tide after all!

Yes meet at 09:00. Wind forecast does seem to be easing for the morning, with the stronger winds now forecast for later tomorrow and the following day:- www.xcweather.co.uk/forecast/cardiff
