Anyone who has read my previous posts will know the form. I start a thread, other say if they can come or not, then after the trip I post a quick report. The report normal says great sail, great night on boat/in pub followed by great sail back. Well as this was getting predictable/boring this one is different. On Friday night we had enjoyed the musical jam session in the lower bar and decided Lynmouth was a better bet with a little more protection from the south east than Porlock. We left Cardiff 0800 Saturday with Bright Flyer for company. Although the wind was light, it was, as predicted, from the south east. After arriving at Lynmouth lunchtime and dropping the anchor, I inflated the dingy and Edwina, Lilly and I rowed toward the shore. As we looked for a good place to land it didn't look quite as inviting as it had from Chausey. Before we had the chance to decide what to do next we were hit by a large breaking wave which turned the dingy over and dumped us all in the water. We all made it safely to the rocky foreshore. We then set about trying to get us and the dingy out through the surf. After a number of disastrous attempts. including some with help from two fishermen who had stripped down to their underpants, we decided to give up and walk up the path which zigzagged up the cliff. I tied the dingy to a large rock well above the high water line. During our attempts Martin and Sarah had brought Blight Flyer over to try to help. He informed the Coastguard of our plight and as we approached the road they were heading down to meet us. We were checked over by a paramedic then taken down to Lynmouth where Edwina was kitted out in a pair of very fetching blue CG overalls. I had concerns that, as the tide was rising the chain I had put out may not be enough. The CG tasked the Minehead lifeboat to pick us up in Lynmouth harbour and take us back out to Chausey. I let out some more chain out and we settled in for a very uncomfortable night as the wind had gone around to the east and was whipping around Foreland point kicking up the sea. Sunday we tried to round the headland and head for Cardiff but the winds were up to 6/7 with big confused seas. We all decided it was better to head for Watermouth where we could get out of the weather and, with the help of Martins mate Gary, get ashore and head for the pub. As we were picking up a mooring the throttle cable on Chausey broke. On Monday we left Watermouth long before low tide and, on Martins suggestion, stayed tight inshore along the English coast, which negated most of the ebb. Chausey was motoring nicely with the throttle tied open with a piece of string. Going past Lynmouth I checked the foreshore and the dingy had gone. After heading down as far as Porlock we motorsailed over to Rhoose and on to Cardiff where Edwina took us into the Barrage with tickover only. So, not the normal happy smiley report but lots of lessons learnt and although a little battered we all survived. Thanks are due to Martin and Sarah and apologies for involving them in my stupidity. Some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that my dingy was not retrieved by the CG, it appears to have been stolen. The good news is that during the sail down to Lynmouth Martin called us to say there was dolphin near Bright Flyer. Here is a video the Edwina took. If you look carefully it shows up just behind Bright Flyer about 5 seconds in.. Allan

Lilly was very nervous after we tipped over the first time. After 3 or 4 attempts to get back through the surf, all of which ended with three of us in the water, she went up the rocks and obviously didn't want to try again. When we walked up the cliff path she was very subdued. Her feet were all a bit sore from scrabbling across the stones. I spoke to Edwina last night and Lilly is pretty much back to normal now. She had her lifejacket on at all times. Allan PS, I've just noticed that Lilly has been on the forum recently.

Allan, Glad to hear you are all alright. Don't feel bad, this could have happen to any one of us. Inflatable dinghies have a mind of their own in surf - that why the Kids love them :-) Sounds like a Thursday Night talk or two - coming up. You've had quite an eventful season so far for 2011!! Roll on 2012 Cheers
