Newport & Uskmouth Sailing Club's Regatta - 24/25th September. Some how the wrong dates were put up on the BCYA website for the NUSC regatta - it is actually 24th and 25th September. There's racing Saturday and Sunday this year, with separate dinghy racing. They were originally going to charge £10 but now it is free with prizes and safety boat cover for the dinghies. Entertainment in evening and a BBQ for a small charge. Join this club cruise to Newport's regatta and gain 6 Blue Book Challenge points! (2 for visiting a BC club, 2 for attending another BC club's regatta and 2 for joining a CYC club cruise). It is the sole and inescapable responsibility of each skipper to decide whether to enter or continue participating in any event, especially with regard to prevailing and forecast weather conditions and passage planning. Please also ensure your vessel and it’s equipment is in a sound and seaworthy condition and that you and your crew are suitably experienced, properly prepared, equipped and clothed for the forecast conditions and any adverse weather as required.

Is anyone thinking of doing this?
We are probably going, weather looks OK but we will have to be back in Cardiff fairly early Sunday, which means lunchtime looking at the tides. I'll also have to check with them for space in the Pill.

Afraid we are down at Dale. First time in two years on our own mooring, it seems everyone from the club but us have used it!

I'm probably going, but won't be racing. Will probably leave about 13:00 on Sat.
I believe Allan is considering it too.

Three of us, Camalot, High Spirits and Xanadu, locked out at 13:00 at about the same time as someone switched off the wind, with what little of it was left backing SE. Spinnakers and cruising chutes were deployed to no avail so engines were started. Then my phone rang. It was Huw informing me that he was going to "give Ange a little surprise". Next minute he was in the water. Huw goes overboard. Ange brings Camalot smartly round and heads back towards the casualty - almost there. Huw climbs aboard. Into welcoming arms? I'm surprised Ange didn't leave him there! There followed a call on the radio inviting me to do the same - politely declined. As far as I am concerned swimming is something that happens when you get sailing wrong. We arrived at NUSC to a warm welcome and were directed to our respective berths, in our case alongside the pontoon in the pill, for Camalot and High Spirits the pontoon in front of the club house. We passed the racing fleet on our way in, including Bright Flyer, about 10 minutes before the start. If had realised that they were running two separate races Sat & Sun instead of a series I would have gone down earlier and entered the Sat race. After securing the boat we headed straight for the bar and ordered two pints of "Rubbish" - their description, not mine and turned out to be a very pleasant pint of Reverend James, poured directly from the cask set up behind the bar. It didn't last long and eventually we were all on cans. I think it was a great night, lovely BBQ (safe), salads and desert etc, but my memory is a bit fuzzy. Had to be up early in order not to miss the tide getting out of the pill. From no wind on Sat we had 20 knots plus on Sun morning. Second reef in and used two thirds of the Genoa. A great sail back, arriving in time for a couple of pints in the bar before home.

It's always a good idea to practice emergencies. Last Wednesday I did a pot rope around the prop drill. 0600 off St Gowans. This included practice of being towed thanks to the Angle RLNI. Not one of my best days. Allan

There followed a call on the radio inviting me to do the same - politely declined. As far as I am concerned swimming is something that happens when you get sailing wrong. We've practiced a few times in the past with fenders and life buoys, but, with the water at it's warmest for the year about now, (and the trip needing a bit of livening up with the lack of wind) I felt it was about time to make the drills a little more realistic. I phoned Mike beforehand so that he was on hand (as a veteran of my safety boat courses!) to save me if required, or if Ange threw a strop and left me there! In the event she did great, getting back to me swiftly, the only slight error being that she misjudged her approach slightly falling off the wind and allowing the gennaker to fill, which with more wind could have caused problems. Matt (my 7 YO) also had to be reminded to keep pointing to me. So maybe there'll be another swim or two before the water gets too cold.
