Lots of wind at the start, none at the end! Volition and Chausey are in Watermouth, Bright Flyer went to Lynmouth. Allan Had a txt from M&S on Bright Flyer to say they were heading back to Watchet to enable them to have a late start today. As all competitors retired yesterday the race is being re-run today in reverse.

Not all competitors retired. Dave on GEM, with Bob(albatross) and Colin(Hidden Secret) and Mike on RED EYE, with Neville( Artful Dodger)both made it to the finish and stayed overnight in Illfracombe, returning on Sunday.

Not all competitors retired. Dave on GEM, with Bob(albatross) and Colin(Hidden Secret) and Mike on RED EYE, with Neville( Artful Dodger)both made it to the finish and stayed overnight in Illfracombe, returning on Sunday. Unfortunately, none of those above sent a text on Saturday with their start and finish times, as instructed. The instruction to send the start and finish times by text message was given everywhere the race was advertised, here on the forum, on the posters in the club and on the table top event guides in the bar - so everyone who knew about the race should have been aware of the requirement to text their times. So as I was unaware of any of those you've listed taking part, and informed that the other competitors were unsuccessful, I susgested the race be re-run on the Sunday. I have since had a text from Mike on Red Eye, but still nothing from any of the others. I don't really understand why people would take the trouble to take part in a race but not bother to log their times???

Mike has the exact times, but from memory, we took 5hrs 39mins 55 sec on Red Eye, Dave took 5hrs 30mins on Gem. He crossed the line behind us, but started later than we did.

As far as I know the boats that took part were Bright Flyer, Gem, Red Eye, Celtic Breeze, Chausey & Volition. We had a disastrous start on Saturday morning with a genoa sheet jammed in the winch, so started again when Vince had freed it, only for it to happen again after our second start, so that held us up somewhat as we were unable to tack. Also that terrible squall was really awful, and in fact with a couple of other things going wrong we discussed turning back twice before we'd even got as far as Sully Island. However we did persevere but had to retire later in the day when we were totally becalmed. A phone call to Sarah on Bright Flyer revealed that they had also retired and were anchored off Lynmouth waiting for the tide before they headed back for a night in Watchet. We motored along to Watermouth, in company with Chausey, who also had retired with a sickly crew. We were hoping to have a couple of beers in Watermouth YC, advertised as being open from 8.30 pm, we waited intil almost 9.00 pm and still no sign of life so rowed back to our boats for supper and an early night for the early start in the morning. Later Allan told me that looking through his binoculars, the club did appear to have opened. Never mind, another time. We left Watermouth just after 7.00 am just after we had started to float, and clocked our times as we passed the Copperas Rock buoy and eventually when we passed the Penarth ODM. We locked in to the barrage at 18.15

I'm always looking for the best plan to get down the channel. I would be very interested to hear the start times of the boats that made it. I chose to leave late and have all the tide with us at the top of the channel. This was scuppered by the squall that started as we put the sail up. I imagine that the successful boats were able to use the extra wind to drive them down the channel when we were having to beat into it. Allan

Orrigional posting by Dave, transferred to this thread.
Sat we did the 50 miler in company with Bright Flyer, Violition & Redeye. Turned out to be a boisterous sail with SSW wind. For Gem, it was the tale of 2 halyards! The jib halyard parted before we started so the others 3 boats were gone. Following a beat to the Ranie there was a fast close reach down channel & we got in front. Pity we hadn't come harder on the wind because after the Foreland we were forced to tack whilst crafty Mike & Nev on Redeye came down the bank and crossed 100 metres ahead of us at the Copperas Rock buoy. Well sailed bo(u)ys! We finished first on elapsed time at 5 hrs 30 mins (start 10.40 finish 16.40). I believe Bright Flyer & Violition retired (?) & a good decision in those conditions - would have had a hard beat against the tide from the Foreland. The return trip on Sun was fast - downwind under main & spinnaker. Wind variable 10 - 19 kts, We sailed at about 10 kts average until, just at Nash Point, the line holding the bowsprit up parted! The pole (no sail on it) flopped down & acted like a big sea brake. Impossible to raise it so needed to drop the spinny to round up. Whilst trying to downhaul the spi squeezer, the spi halyard parted! Gem ran over the spi resulting in torn cloth & sail jammed at daggerborad. Gem sat comfortably into the wind with mainsail centred whilst we removed (after one cut -ouch!) the spinny. Took 45 mins. We then sailed to CYC under jib plus spinny. Bob (Albatros) & Colin (Hidden Secret) were a great crew & we all had a great weekend.
In future, I think the course should be selected on the day in view of the weather forecast. Make the course so that the slower boats can finish (you have to finish to have a chance of winning).
What other CYC boats are going to join us for the Holmes race next month? I need crew.

The number does seem a bit high. According to :- ByronSoftware.org.uk (070170 19268) - Sail Boat Racing 2011 / 2012 it gives a rating of
Farrier F32 Tri. With outboard motor. 662
Other trimarans with ib engine have ratings of Corsair F-28 Tri. 810 Dragonfly 35 Tri. 742

I have the Byron rating in writing, no mistake! In common with a lot of other classes, the are many variants. Gem is fitted for cruising e.g. has the FIXED 40 foot mast whilst the standard production F31 & C31 has a ROTATING wingmast 42 ft 6 ins. The performance of these boats is very weight sensitive. With the limited race results that Gem has in Round Lundy, Holms race etc. the rating seems about right or even a little low! In a menagerie fleet a multihull is a wild card! We need enough wind to plane in order to hit higher speeds. A course that favours reaching is also good for speed. I did send my start & finish times by text to Huw. However it appears that the start text didn't go through (& I didn't notice it - being racing!) but the finish text did. Dave

Dave Still having trouble scoring this race:- Mike (Redeye), can you confirm your handicap is still 878? Dave (Gem), if you started at 10:40 and finished at 16:40, as stated, that would mean you took 6 hours, not 5:30??? Also I did not receive any text messages from you Dave, possibly you got a digit of my number wrong? Huw
