This year we intend to resurrect the 50 miler, with an honesty race from Cardiff to Ilfracombe.
The Race will be from the Penarth YC ODM mark to the Copperas buoy just before Ilfracombe - The Copperas mark must be left to Starboard. Sully Island must also be left to Starboard.
All participants must send their start and finish times to me by text message. I don't want to publish my phone number on here so make sure you see me for it before the race.
There is no set start and finish time, so you can pick a time to set off giving the best tidal advantage to your boat. You must however start and finish on 20th August 2011.
Whilst I'm aware that this race is a little shy of 50 miles, I feel it meets the intent of the race.

Have sent a pm to everyone who has posted here with my mobile number to send your start finish times to. Most of you probably have it already, but at least you've all got the same info.
Anyone else thinking of taking part?

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to give this one a miss. My hand will definitely not be up to the job and even if I was a passenger I'm sure I'd manage to do some more damage.
Might just be OK for the Bristol trip in September.

I'd put money on Mike having checked the weather forecast for Xanadu's favourite light Easterlies before writing this! ;D How's the hand mending now?

In answer to a couple of questions I've been asked:-
The start line extends from the Penarth Yacht club flag mast to their ODM buoy. This line then extends out (almost perfectly) to the Mid Cardiff SHM. I have no problem with you passing either side of the ODM mark as the water can be shallow there around LW.
Also the use of an autopilot is permitted - I'd much rather see a short/single handed boat able to join in safely than have to give it a miss.

Any thoughts on where to spend Saturday night? I suggest it's a choice between Ilfracombe and Watermouth. Allan

Is it me? Am I missing something? Or am I just getting a bit senile? Someone please explain. Huw says that the Copperas mark must be left to starboard. The Copperas mark is a SHM with buoyage going west to east. From the way I see it, surely we will be passing the buoy on our port hand side if we are heading towards Ilfracombe. I can't see any way of passing the mark to starboard other than passing it on the inside or turning round and heading back east. I am sure it is perfectly safe for a small yacht to pass it on the inside, but we wouldn't normally do that.
Please someone tell me I am being totally stupid.

Sheila, I've seen loads of people fishing inside the Copperas buoy. I'm sure there will be enough water, even at low tide. As Huw talked about low water at the ODM buoy above, maybe he is planning to get to the Copperas buoy at high water? Allan

I am not a racer myself But has PYC ODM mark will be used near high water it could be past to port of boat. Copperas buoy to starboard of boat finish timing taken when the buoy bears 360". Course distance 36kn
I hope to take part
Could anchor in Combe Martin Bay early start using tide sail back Cardiff

I plan to go to Watermouth or Ilfracombe afterwards. Hopefully, in time to get a drink or two at one of the yacht clubs, it may require an early start. Allan

As Huw talked about low water at the ODM buoy above, maybe he is planning to get to the Copperas buoy at high water? Allan Yes Sheila, you do need to go the 'wrong' side of the copperas buoy - otherwise you could technically claim to have past the mark when sailing past the Mumbles, 20 miles further North, which in the right wind could be quicker to reach. According to my chart the Copperas Rock (which the SHM guides vessels around) is covered by 1.4m at CD - with LW Ilfracombe being 2.3m - there should be no less than 3.7m of water even if you go directly over the rock, which should be perfectly safe unless there is a fair swell. And as there's 0.1Nm between the rock and the buoy - you shouldn't need to get that close to the rock when going inside of the buoy. As for the LW comment, it was aimed at someone in particular, who I'm sure knows exactly what I'm talking about!
