I've been looking for some new (for me) places to go close to Cardiff. On Google maps I found Burry Port, has anyone been there? I have read that there is a relatively new marina. On a good day it looks like it would be possible to get there in a tide and a half. Allan

I think you will find its a no go area for cruisers. New marina yes but easy access no. There is a great deal of silt and unmarked sandbanks. Local fishermen who know the area take small boats in but thats about it. Basically there is no easy channel to navigate. We were warned against it when doing our day skipper course out of Swansea as we rather fancied it as well having visited it by road. Hope that helps.
Situated in the heart of the award winning Millennium Coastal Park, we are the newest marina in Wales with a 450 berth facility.
I have also found the following on the Carmarthenshire County Council website.
On the north coast of the Loughor Estuary, Burry Port Marina offers boat owners the perfect mix of leisure facilities in 14 miles of landscaped parkland. The marina makes an ideal base for exploring the South and West Wales coastline and lies at the gateway to Carmarthen Bay. It enjoys stunning views of the Gower and are within easy reach of the glorious Pembrokeshire coastline.
Over £8 million has been spent on converting the old tidal harbour into a modern marina and yet the facility still retains its Victorian charm and is just a stone’s throw from a small but vibrant town centre.
The facility offers berths for vessels of between six and 12 metres. The marina has been dredged to a depth of approximately 1.5 metres and, therefore, can only accommodate boats with draughts up to that depth.
Water levels within the marina are controlled by an automatic tidal flap gate. As a result, open access to the sea is limited to approximately two to two and a half hours either side of high water.

Sounds like a nice little challenge. I will have a look at some books and maybe see if anyone else has been there. Allan

Oooh, Brian! There you are. Are you still living the high life? It has been very quiet from you lately - I was beginning to get worried!
