A few pictures and words from last night's festvities. Apologies in advance if I get any names or cups wrong. The night began with an excellent meal. Prawn cocktail, minestrone soup, roast beef with horseradish and vegetables and a selection of cheesecakes, followed by cheese and biscuits and coffee. I note that I appear to have a double chin in that photograph. I think it must be a camera fault. Ray, our Commodore, then stood and we all welcomed the Commodore's address. He thanked people for their hard work through the year and explained the dredging that had been carried out and that which was still to be done. Lastly, he wished everyone well for the coming season. Applause. Jock Mountstephens(above), our master of ceremonies then introduced John Bettles, who gave a long and very humorous speech on the pitfalls of his trade, a funeral director. John had everyone in stitches for ages. John was swiftly followed by John Croft Davies, of Cardiff Bay yacht club, who went on to explain the unforseen circumstances that can result from poor flag etiquette. This was again greeted by loud laughter and applause.

Tony Burris then joined Ray to begin the presentations. First up was Phil Bradley, who took the Cruisers overall points trophy, and a couple of other trophies as well. The next trophy, for the Frostbite series, was awarded to Nick Nicklasson. who explained in detail the lengths some racers will go to to win a trophy, even down to handing away a single gallon of diesel! Tony then awarded the 50mile trophy/Tony Burris long distance award to Allan Fawcus, of Chausey, for his trip to the isles of Chausey in Northern France, after which Allan's boat is named. I picked up the trophy on Allan's behalf.

The Cardiff Yacht Club dinghy series went to Peter Bentley and partner. The award was picked up by Jim Atkinson: On to the Best dressed vessel at the Harbour vessel, and this went to Sheila Parker Brown, and her vessel, Alana. Sheila stayed on the floor as Ray and Tony called Louise Williams up to join her and accept the Breaksea cup, awarded to the two of them for sailing a cruiser to Portishead and back ealier in the season. The girls plan more ladies section events such as this in the future. On a personal note, I'd just like to add how proud I am of Louise, and Sheila for doing this. Keep it up girls!

Ray then gave out two special awards. Firstly, the Portishead cup, donated by Portishead cruising club. This went to Steve Quick, for all his hard work in the club and bar. THen Ray awarded the Commodore cup, to a club member for outstanding service to the club, our harbour master, Kenny Short. We didn't get a picture of Kenny (can anyone else help) but he was so delighted, there were unconfirmed reports that he was seen dancing later in the evening! Ray then paid tribute to the long suffering ladies in the club, who work so hard and put up with so much. Bouquets of flowers were handed to Meryl, Rowena, Wendy and Judy, our president. Again, apologies, I don't have pictures of all:

The formal part of the evening over, the band set up and the dancing started. A raffle was held a bit later, and Sheila and Vince actually won something this time, after going home empty handed at the last club do: At this stage Vince declared that he was feeling unwell, and a look came over his face that had us all worried. I've certainly never seen him looking like this before:

;D Great fun was had by all. I think we left near the end, well after midnight, but things were becoming hazy by then. I do remember taking one last picture of Louise and Sheila, they were so delighted with their cup. Many thanks to Ray and Wendy and all those who helped organise the night, to the bar staff, to Jock for the announcements, to Tony for organising the presentations and to all those who spoke and everyone else who helped, as well as all the people who attended. Please feel free to add additional comments and pictures, and please let me know where I have made errors. Here's to a great 2010 season at CYC! Martin

I have to agree, it was a brilliant night. So much work and organisation goes into a night like that ,I'd like to thank everyone for their efforts. I'm sure Sheila will add her thoughts later but I was absolutely stunned and delighted to recieve a cup for our 'ladies sailing'. We plan to expand on last years' sailing, hopefully with trips to Swansea and Watchet in the spring. Thanks to Martin and Vince for all their encouragement and praise (and trust!) Both Sheila and myself were delighted that Ray expressed his pride in our efforts and I feel it is great to be able to contribute and put something back into our club. Louise

Well, Louise has said it all really, I haven't much to add. From me, and on behalf of Vince as well, our thanks to Ray and Wendy and all involved in putting on such a good night, and congratulations to all prize-winners. Thanks to Ray for his encouragement in the ladies' sailing thing. We hope to be able to do a lot more of that next season, hopefully more ladies will be encouraged to come out. Email or pm either Louise or myself if you are interested girls! Hopefully Angie & Camelot will be able to join us this year!!??*** How about it Huw? Here are some more pics, and my apologies as always, for being a lousy photographer! Phil with his hoard of prizes! The new Portishead Trophy Steve collecting his award. And finally Kenny! Thought I'd throw these other couple of pics in too! Sorry Louise! Who's that smart guy in the pic? Yes, definitely unwell I think! As a final word, I would also like to say thank you to all the club members, from all sections, for all the fab times we have had in the club with you all. In our two years or so of membership we've simply had the best time and loads of laughs. (Oh dear, am I getting sentimental in my old age or is it still the drink talking from last night?)

Love that last picture!!! Yes I hope Angie can get out sailing with the girls as much as possible, and I might just let you take Camelot - not sure if I'll allow a pink flag though!

Excellent. Thanks Sheila, What was Louise doing to Vince in that last shot? I don't know, but it looks like he was enjoying it - or it was very painful! Can't decide which!
