A few have asked, so I thought I'd put some info here. After (almost) completing the 'disposal' of Goldie (notice the skip full of yellow GRP in the compound), I've bought my new boat into the club. It's an Eventide 27' (a rare stretched version of the 26), designed by Maurice Griffiths. Of wooden construction, diagonal planking with ply overlay on mahogany and teak. It has a rare Italian Arona 195 diesel engine, 15hp. Provenance discovery is still ongoing, but on my initial examination it is extremely well built - well, at least the hull is well built. As with any 'older' wooden boat, there are modifications by several owners, one on top of the other, with the last owner being a hacker of the first order (leading to many "what the F*****" exclamations from me as I prod everything with my rot-finding screwdriver). She is called Gambor, with an SSR of 00266, and I'll keep the name. Gambor will be converted to my rig of choice, the fully-battened Chinese lug sail, aka junk rig (which, of course, I don't yet know how). But for the moment, I'm chasing leaks topsides (of which there are many). I know nothing about wooden boats, but obviously this won't stop me! Please drop by if you're around and fancy a bit of 'tut-tut wouldn't do that'!

Well done mate, I am glad the Goldie saga didn't put you off. I look forward to seeing a junk rig on the bay and beyond. Allan

You do choose unusual boats. Hope you get more luck with this one.

Well done, our plan to take over the club and fill it with Eventides marches on,

Yes, well done, I hope you and Maurice will be very happy. If memory serves me correctly, Gambor is spanish for prawn, so she should be good in the water. See you in Lundy, late Sept.
M.
Edit, I've just remembered, an Aroma 195 is not a diesel, it's an espresso machine, so watch out for the steam. I can smell the coffee from here.

That's brill Martin!
Paschall, we both wish all the very best with your new love! And may you have many happy hours prodding and poking and playing with her! Just worked out that if you leave the G out of Gambor you would have an anagram of Rambo, or if you add a Y you have an anagram of Go Barmy!

Just wanted to wish you Good Luck with the new boat. It was a very sad sight seeing Goldie in the skip - I never heard exactly why??
Wishing you fair winds with more time to enjoy them and less time fixing things!
Cheers, Peter

Had a look last night - It certainly looks like a good solid hull - converting to junk rig doen't look easy though! How will you adequately support the mast without shrouds?

Here we are folks, I took this picture of Paschall and his new boat this afternoon: Ha! Well, Martin omitted a few bits, which I've now included, including a dodgy rudder salesman!

Thanks everyone; Eventides should, of course, have their own part of the forum, along with ye olde wooden boats . Converting to junk will rack my other brain cell for a while, but not impossible. Unfortunately I can't use my existing mast, nor the ones which came with Gambor (not long enough and not strong enough). It'll need around 36 foot, with a bury of approx. 5'7". Unstayed works on a junk by having it keel stepped (although there are other ways), with partners are the cabin top; so, 5'7" will be in the cabin, on top of the keel, with strenghtened cabin top to hold it there. It's a well tested design, being around for about three thousand years If only we had a loft or somefink at the club, I could attempt to embarass myself by building my own mast! BTW, I'm looking for a cheap but good local supplier of marine ply - Gambor leaks like a sieve topsides and rather than chasing every one, I might just replace the whole lot (gulp!). That's my weekend taken then ;D

Not nessasary to use marine ply topside unless you got lots of money, you can get a sheet of 8x4ftx1/2inch exterior ply from travis perkins, it was on offer last week for £19 a sheet, then paint with epoxy resin or some good paint, good luck.
