Went down to Mermaid Quay last night to take a look at WOW on the Waterfront. Really worth going to see if you can make it tonight (last performance) from 9.00 pm.
I had watched the construction of the set on Thursday lunch time and couln't imagine what it would all be about.
There were about six or seven diases built around the central "stage" which consisted of a crane with a sort of frame attached, and to the frame were attached various sets of instruments, consisting of about 3 sets of drums (not your rock band sort of drum sets) and 5 sets of units with bells set up.
As dusk started to fall, the players came out and took their positions on the diases. They were all dressed in weird costumes, reminded me of French medieval players and jesters (they actuallly are a French troupe). From the diases the players were ringing bells and doing various performances and calling to the audience, then at a specific signal they would all change places amd move on to the next platform. Each plaatform was lit with flame torches.
Eventually these players moved forward to the crane unit where they took their positions at the instruments, standing on platforms which incorporated the instruments. Suddenly the crane started to lift and the players and the instruments rose into the air, and the music was quite magical with the sounds of the bells and drums. As they rose up the frame sort of opened and closed, and spun around and then suspended further up were three trapeze artists who performed high in the air. It is very hard to describe, and Vince was very glad that I had dragged him down to see it, because you can't really imagine it just by verbal description. After the performance was over there were some really lovely fireworks.
So get on down there this evening if you can make it - you might have to take an hour out from Ray's party just to go and have a look!
Going up!
