Now for an update on our trip to France. I left Cardiff on Friday 26th July and sailed Chausey to Clovelly where I picked up Edwina. We then sailed to the Helford river, arriving around 8pm on Saturday. We then moved on to Fowey. Chausey on a bouy opposite the town quay in Fowey.

From Fowey we moved onto Dartmouth where we meant our friends, Michelle and Tony, who joined us on Chausey and John, Ian and Dicky who sailed on Johns boat Elba. All the guys are ex rugby players! On Thursday 2nd July we set off for Guernsey, arriving in the evening. On the way we had a surprise when this surfaced between us! During the trip we also saw a basking shark.

During the trip across the channel we had the only technical failure of the whole trip. The shackle holding the top of the genoa on Elba broke or came loose. When we got into the harbour at St Peterport Tony went up my mast and pulled Elba mast over to fix the problem.

From St Peterport we went to St Hellier, arriving in time to see the last Lions test. A good result and an excuss to spend most of the day in pubs! From St Hellier we headed to Granville, where I used to live. On the way the sun shone but the wind dropped. That was when we passed Isles Chausey, after which my boat is named! At that quite emotional time I decided I wanted to be alone, so went up and sat on the speader.

We saw this boat heading in the other direction. On the way into Granville we saw a traditional French greeting! It was not aimed at us, there was another French boat next to them.

We spent two days in Granville including a couple of good meals some good wine and some cold beers. On Wednesday We set off for Carteret via Isle Chausey. On the way there we were bashing into wind and tide, hence the water on the lens of my camera!

From Carteret we headed to Alderney, which we found wonderfull. The others hired bikes, while Edwina and I walked around the west part of the island. Including overlooking the Swinge. When we got back to the town we found the others idea of cycling!

On our walk though the town, we saw the following outside a pub, which I thought was fun. Some of the Island is a little behind the times, this appeared to be the town clock.

In the afternoon we carried on our walk and moved to the east of the Island, from the top of a hill we could see Chausey in Braye harbour. On the way back we saw some people enjoying building sand castles on the beach.

When we got back to the town after our walk we found the others. I think there is a theme.

The following morning (Friday) we set off for Dartmouth. On the way across we had to go around the east side of the TSS. A yacht in front of us manage to get in the way of a large ship, not easy when there is so much sea around! I can't imagine getting so close to a ship that he needed to sound his horn 15miles from the nearest land! I recently read that the worst 15 polluting ships create the same ammount of greenhouse gasses as all the cars in the world. I estimate the smoke from this ship spread at least 20 miles.

We finished the main part of our trip with a great meal in the Royal castle hotel in Dartmouth and said goodbye to our friends on Saturday morning. We then went west towards Plymouth. On the way we went through what I will now call the Salcombe triangle. While we were in the area we heard that the motorboat Aquanaut had sunk off Hope cove and a 28ft yacht had lost it's mast in the same area. Apart fom the rain we had a nice sail to a mooring at Torpoint, where Chausey will remain for a month. On the way it was very wet. I hope to keep you posted with our adventures sailing around the Plymouth area.

Looks like great fun. Nice pics, I especially like the ones of your hand. Not jealous at all, honest. I hope you didn't load the boat up to the gunwhales with contraband wine on your return......?

Yeah I was confused by the strange colour of the water? shouldn't it be a beautifully browny biege?

It is nice to sail in something other than chocolate milkshake for a short while. I will be back in the brown stuff soon enough. Allan

If anyone saw Coast on BBC2 tonight, they showed a little of Ilse des Chausey, afterwhich my boat is named. It gave a small flavour of how beautifull they are. Allan
