Well, I left Cardiff at 1200hrs on Thursday 23rd with two reefs in as I planned to go non-stop to Newlyn. As the wind was not too strong I shook one of the reefs out at Culver east and then listened to Ardua's situation unfolding. The trip to Newlyn was all westerly winds from almost nothing to force 4/5 and took 26 hours. Edwina joined me on Saturday and we left Sunday lunchtime for the trip over to Cameret. The afternoon was a good sail until dusk when the wind dropped and the motor had to go on. The morning, Monday, started with light rain and mist. This soon turned into heavy rain and fog, so the radar went on to check for ships entering and leaving the Ushant TSS. As we entered the Channel du Four we went through a bit of rain. We went down the Channel in thick fog, navigating from buoy to buoy using the radar, as the chartplotter chip ran out just as we entered. When we got to the end the fog lifted and by the time we had sailed over to Cameret the weather was clear and the sun was beating down. That night we met Roger and Liam on Katy Dee from Barry yacht club. Again we had a day off the next day to recover from the overnight trip. I'll add some more when I have time. Allan

After a day exploring Cameret and a good meal in the evening we set off at 0500hrs for Ilse de Groix along with Katy Dee. The Raz de Seine was calm as the tide was slack. With the wind from the west it was a good sail down around another point and across between Ilse Mouton and Ilses de Glenans. We arrived at Ilse de Groix around 1800hrs and went off to find a bar. Katy Dee followed us in around 2000hrs. The next day, after a lazy morning we hired some bikes and explored the east side of the island. During the the ride we found a number of beautiful bays. As we cycled from there I found my next house. The next morning we had planned to set off early but found the start battery was flat. I changed it for one of the domestics and we decided to head for the mainland to make it easier to sort it out. It turned out to be the split charge relay, so not too much of a problem. As we had left late and the wind was on our nose we didn't arrive until 2000hrs. The marina was full of sail training boat from the Glenans sailing school. This brought back memories, as I did my first sailing course with them in the early 90s. The next day, once the battery was sorted, we went for a look around the walled town, which overlooks the marina and fish harbour. I also went to look at the entrance, in case we decided to leave at low tide. The next day was a fantastic day, with nice wind, and great weather. We had planned to head for Le Guilivent but it was so good we decided to head for Audiene. There are people on this forum would accuse me of sailing in my underpants on days like that. I can now prove that is not always the case! As it was nearly high tide, we headed up the river and moored on a visitors pontoon. After a good meal on the quayside we had a good night's sleep and set off early in the morning to find somewhere to wait for the tide for Raz de Seine. We anchored amongst some moorings in clear flat water. Our plan to head straight up through the Raz and the Channel du Four. Unfortunately, there was not too much wind, so we sailed slowly up to Cameret and stayed there overnight. The next day it was good to see the Channel du Four was clear of fog. We rode the tide up to L'ber Ildut, a great little place with unusal moorings. I think the trip back was one of the best sails I have ever had. 102 miles in less than 17 hours. Due to the Atlantic swell and rollers Edwina says it was the second worst trip she has ever had! Chausey certainly performed fantastically. Hopefully I can download a video at some point. Edwina took the train home from Penzance and I set off on Saturday mooring for the trip around Lands End and home. For the first time, after motoring into the wind, I managed to sail via the inner route and up to Hartland point. The wind dropped so I had to motor across Bideford bay to Watermouth where I stopped for some rest and to wait for the tide. On Sunday I left just after low tide and had a nice sail for a few hours. The wind filled in off Aberthaw but rather than start sailing again I motorsailed the last bit of the trip while watching the British Grand Prix. Allan

Nice account Allan. What, do you think you are some kind of female tennis star or something? Were you posing for that?

Allan, Good trip write up and photos. The lads in the club said that you sail by the skin of your pants. I thought they were kidding. !!! Glad to hear that you met Roger and Liam on Katy Dee from Barry yacht club, we met them on our Lundy trip. Good to hear they made it. Cheers

The last I heard from Roger and Liam was that they had reached Les Sable d'Olonne. Liam is hoping to stay for a month and Roger is staying down there for another month. Allan

Great to hear you've travelled further afield this year It feels like a lifetime away since i visited those places we spent quite a few hours looking at the Raz de Seine. but Cardiff Boats arrive as far as here Destiny is moored here The Lagoon St George, but I have not met the Owners but I think the Cruising is equally as good in France too many French there though indeed there are too many here, have met some great Dutch Couples there are tree Dutch boats here all sailed from Holland at different times to eventually meet here.
