Ha Ha But seriously, - I met up with the Police on one of their new fast RIBs while over at Portishead last weekend. Apparently its a new venture and there just training at the moment. There's a boat based in Portishead and I think the other is Swansea. Although they are primarily interested in drug / people smuggling etc. they said they would soon be stopping people and asking for registration papers and VHF licenses etc. - you have been warned!

Peter,
Nice to see feedback from this forum topic, although a little silly I must admit but I was hoping it was going to raise awareness as well as it being a bit of a giggle.
Peter it was just a matter of time, I know they are policing jet ski's, ski boats etc, and rumours about the alcohol are coming true, sounds like they are taking action. Would you know what the measures are regarding drinking and boating, is it only when under way etc

Robinstall - and everybody else that ought to be interested.. There's an article re. drinking in the latest RYA magazine. It looks as if it is still very unclear; the RYA realize this.. and are challenging it. Apparently their stance is that regulation is unnecessary as we have no 'official' problem in the UK. The department of transport have been using figures taken from USA and Canada! The biggest problem I can see is when your moored up (and is anchoring different?) I can't see them bringing alcohol limits for this situation - apart from the opposition it would be completely unenforceable -unless they hugely increase the police presence on the water. In my opinion; 'Drunk and Disorderly' is one thing, but 'over the limit' is quite another. I haven't had time to look in to it thoroughly, but here are the links from the RYA magazine providing further info. www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/open/exceptionfromalcohol/. www.rya.org.uk/AboutRYA/lobbyact/Pages/alcohollimits.aspxPersonally I can't see this being a problem in the near future. But it certainly worth monitoring..

Not sure if you realise but the law currently being contemplated is for an exception for the crew of boats less than 7 meters and capable of no more than 7 knots. The law in currently in force for all of us. And no exception is even being talked about for those of us with boats larger than 7 meters (23 ft). We should always have a sober Skipper, navigator and helmsman on board (those these roles don't need to be filled by separate persons).
I wonder how many of us bother with this - not me!!!
