Anyone fancy Portishead on Saturday? The lock opens for the first time at 17-30. Allan

I didn't know you had more than one! Is Louise aware of that? Allan

I had a great trip to Portishead. Chausey and I left on the 15-00 lockout along with an American guy in a steel ketch cutter called Naia. He had decided to motor all the way but I did my best to sail. After trying main and genoa, I settled for genoa only and made around 3.5 kts through the water, in 10-12 kts of wind. I joined Naia in the 18-30 lock and tied up for a beer and beef and jalapino burgers. After a couple of beers in the Royal, I went back to the the marina and met up with Damo for a chat and beer. The morning was a little hazy, then I got up to see a beautiful clear cold day outside. After seeing the forcast of 5-6 against the tide, I put two reefs in and shared the 11-00 lock with Damo. When we got out past the pier, we were greeted with 20 kts of wind and a bit of chop. Damo and I tacked down to E&W where we each went our own way, he tacked back across to get more of a push from the tide, while I continued right over to the Welsh coast, not tacking until the seagulls were walking. Actually it was 5m as I chickened out! As I sailed down towards North Cardiff Damo came across and tacked within about 50m of me. We went into the 14-45 lock and Chausey was back on her home berth not long after. By 15-30 I was in the bar with a beer in my hand. Although only a few hours, the trip back was one of the best passages this year. Allan
