A repeat of last years very popular trip to Jacksons bay for an end of season BBQ on the beach (and this time it doesn't clash with the Brain's TV race starting in Barry!). Bring your family and friends! A great day was had by all those who turned up last year. The plan is to lock out at 10:00 ish (shortly after HW) and sail to Jacksons Bay. All bring a disposable/portable BBQ and food.

Unfortunately it would seem that this date clashes with the Shanghai/Nimrod Cup races that I know Vince is crewing for someone in. In view of the fact that I am not sailing at all at the moment I thought I would drive round to Jacksons Bay a meet everyone there, but unfortunately there is a do on at my dad's residential home that day and as I have not seen him since before I was taken ill I thought I ought to go up with my sister on that day. So, gutted really that it looks like neither of us will be there. Unless there is not much interest in the event on this date and we change it for another day!

Would love to come but going to the Southampton boat show instead. Hope the trip goes well as I really enjoyed it last year. Have fun!

Afraid we're stealing Vince for the Nimrod Cup on this day.

As we've only had one positive response thus far, and three boats crewed by some of the most regular attendees of our cruises - Vince, Sheila, Matt, Mike and Rhiannon - can't make it on the 11th, maybe you would all prefer to move this trip to another date?
The only issue being it's advertised in the club handbook, but, if there's enough interest in an alternate date on here in the next few days, I can put up a poster at the club and send out an email advising the date change.
This would also allow the Cabot Cruising Club weekend, which is 10th - 12th Sept, to be attended by anyone who previously was torn between the two.
The tides would work well on 25th Sept or 9th Oct, and as far as I can tell there is nothing else planned for these dates.
What are your preferences?
9th Oct would work best for me, but I could probably get leave from work for 25th Sept if necessary.

How about you, Duncan? As you were the only positive reply to the initial date I wouldn't want you to miss out.

If it was on the Sunday instead of the Saturday, i.e. on Sunday 12th, we would come along. Alternatively, if we are free on 25 Sept (too early to say now) we will be there.

I'll try to do it twice (weather permitting & assuming it is good the first time! :-) ) I'll also bring my dinghy. I could ferry a few people while the battery holds out. If it dies the passenger rows. ha ha!
Huw, I've looked at the pilotage for Jackson Bay, but it seems to be more for 'bilgers'. I assume you can't land or leave in the dinghy once the tide is below the stones without having to wade through the mud. What is the window of opportunity and how would this work for us fins?

I need to amend the Jackson's bay pilotage article - I've since walked on that mud, and it's not as deep as I thought.
The mud is not as soft as elsewhere in the bristol channel and is no more than an inch or two deep, so fin keelers will want to be out far enough to float.
This obviously means that you can safely walk on the mud, though you will get filthy feet! However on either edge of the bay it's not too bad and this is the place to be getting in or out of a dinghy, not in the middle of the bay. So dinghy access is possible at any state of tide. Though I'd recomend either plastic bags over your shoes or bare feet which you can wash before getting onboard.
The photo's were taken at low water on a fairly 'low' spring tide, and therefore so the water more or less as low as it will ever get.
As I said in the pilotage bit the mud is covered at 8.5m above CD so times are easily calculated if you wish to stay clean!

My, am I being dumb!! Why not just go to the side as far in as poss and climb out of the dinghy onto the breakwater?!?!?! I've never been there but that looks as if it would be easy from your pics. No muddy feet.

Yes that's possible and is pretty much what I've done before, but it does mean clambering over the rocks - which whilst fine for you or I, isn't for everyone. Angie prefers the bare foot approach - mud soon cleans off once your on the sand and can be washed off easliy enough once back in the water on the way back to the boat.
