The cruising section has organised a dinghy/tender race up the River Taff. All club members, sailors or not are welcome to join us.
Any tender you have solid, inflatable or even sailing dinghy if you wish, is acceptable - use of RIB's, speed boats, massive engines etc... will be considered bad sportsmanship! The race official's (my) decision on what constitutes bad sportsmanship is final! Though any boat is welcome to along for fun.
The start line will be the bypass bridge just above the club, the finish point will be the water taxi stop just after the Millenium Stadium, which is inside the Cardiff Castle grounds.
Start Time 11:00.
Once the race is finished, we'll have a picnic (bring your own!) in the castle grounds. Then back for drinks at the club.

Great idea. We hope to be entering two tenders full of hungry kids.

I will be there, hopefully with my loyal crew, Lilly! If she is there on time Edwina will be joining us on foot. She said she thinks I am mad in the dingy and can't be trusted if there is someone to race! Allan

Yes, good idea about walking up. Of course this is an option for anyone who wants to join in the picnic but has not got a tender/dinghy - could always walk up, along the Taff, or even get the water taxi!

You could even turn it into a "Man Vs Boat" challenge with runners setting off at the same time from the club house.

Could do! If I was on foot I'd probably arrive around 6.00 pm though!

I would love to run but I have just googled the route and not only is there no hospital on the way, there are also parts of the way where I could not have an ambulance following me. Allan

Are engines of any size banned...is this a rowing race?

Yes, engines are banned. Except mine. And pubs are banned too. Except the one I go into.
Seriously though, I spoke to Huw earlier today and he said that anything that is normally used as a tender (with or without engine) is OK - but entering a RIB with twin 500hp Mercurys isn't!
Huw also said that he is expecting a lot of breakdowns. Those who have pontoon moorings, haven't used their tenders for years and can't remember which way up the engine goes.

As Julian says anything that would typically be used as a tender is fine, be it powered by an engine, oars, sails (with a collapsible mast for the bridges!) or any combination of the above.
Though someone somewhere may well use a 100hp Rib as a tender it is not really within the intent of the race and would therefore be disqualified. I'm sure we all get the idea. It's supposed to be fun so 'typical tender' is the only rule.
I reckon if there was a pub every 1/4 mile Allan would volunteer to walk!!!
