Huw, Missed last night as I didn't find out in time - not looking at the forum enough... I'm keen to do this trip to Portishead but I need a crew as Wissit is in Uganda and it's a long way for her to come back for the weekend. If you know of anyone looking for a trip could you get them to email me on furlong_paul@hotmail.co.uk, or on this forum? Plenty of room on the boat - Westerly centaur with a new genoa and a nearly new engine .- and I've done the trip before. I'm sure there'll be someone along shortly who'd love to crew for you.

Thanks very much Sheila, I saw that. I guess I could have done that myself. Slow of wit. I'm ok with tides and boats and wind, it's just the talking and communicating with others I find difficult.

I'm new to the club and unfamiliar with portishead - but am buying a yacht there and sailing her back at the end of easter. I'd love to get out sailing and pick up some experience of the sail over and back - so if there is anyone who would like a willing crew for the weekend, or even just one day and I can get the train the other I'd be vey grateful!

Hi Catherine. I will be going to Portishead single handed or possibly with one crew member who intends to jump ship when we get there, so it will be single handed on the way back whatever. You are welcome to join either one or both ways.

Huw, are we going to meet at the flag pole on Saturday in order to sort out who needs crew and who wants to crew? Or have you got that in hand for tomorrow?

At the moment it's only Paul looking for crew, that needs to be resolved - anyone looking for a crewing opportunity? Cath is going with Julian, she's already arranged it. So i don't think there's any need to meet at the pole - it's not been too successful the last few times we've done that anyway. I'm sure we can sort Paul out with a hand one way or another.

Thanks Huw. I'm going to see what the weather and forecast for Sunday are like tomorrow. If they're ok I'll go single-handed, or with crew if someone's available (obviously preferable); if not, I'll pootle around here. The forecast for wind looks good at the moment, but I'm less happy about the forecast sea state - I don't fancy sailing back on Sunday with a rough sea and wind over tide on my own.

Catherine cathruddick@yahoo.co.uk Cath, I know Sheila spoke briefly with you last night, but there is a 'ladies section' and I know at least that Louise and Sheila are quite keen on the idea, and have the experience to sail back with you when you get your boat. Maybe others too. Louise did try and speak to you about it too, but I think you had already left.

This is the forcast for Lands end to St Davids head. My feeling is we are going to do OK. I will be listening to the CG in the morning for the 0600 forcast. Allan

I'd second Allan's opinion. I think we'll have a brisk wind behind us on the way there, and it'll be largely dry. On sunday it looks like the wind may well swing round to be from the East, avoiding any wind over tide swell. Any other opinions?

What a great weekend! We waited off Penarth with Alana for everyone to leave the barrage and get their sails up, then rolled out the genoa and set off for Portishead. Xanadu shot off into the distance (with Rhiannon on board she is always quicker!) followed by Alana. Katy and Sunbeam gybed their way up the channel looking great. Attachments:

Although the weather was overcast, the rain kept off and it was fine all the way. I have always known that Alana sails well but had never realized that she sails herself! I think Sheila and Vince may have read my comment about falling asleep off Penarth and waking up outside Portishead! Attachments:

After a drink with others on Chausey we tucked into a great meal and set off the pub where we spent the evening in great company. My crew insisted on leaving at 07-30 on Sunday morning, insisting it was 08-30 although my body knew the truth! With the wind on our bow we upped sails and tacked down the channel, well the first tack was over the mud with just 0.3m under the keels! My biggest worry was that, had we got stuck, there were still still half a dozen club boats to pass before the tide changed! Anyway all was OK and we tacked again to head over to North Cardiff and again down to the channel. We went into the lock with Alana and Charlie. I would like to thank Huw for organizing the the trip and the crews of the following boats for helping to make it such fun for all aboard Chausey: Alana, Camelot, Charlie, Coracle, Katy, Redeye, Runagane, Sunbeam, Xanadu. I think a special mention should be made of the kids, although I am a kid hating grumpy old man, I thought they all behaved perfectly though out. Two great sails and good company, what more could a sailor ask for? Allan

We went up to Portishead the night before just to make sure it was ready for you. We left at 6.00am (Saturday morning) for a gentle motor back for the first 2 hours. We were followed by a large twin masted yacht far behind us which we lost sight off as we went further down the channel past Barry. Later as we returned to Cardiff the same boat was anchored off Penarth and we both entered the lock at the same time. It was the 1929 95 foot Halycon and it was an absolute pleasure to share the lock with her. She had just had a major refit in Gloucester and looked brand new. Gary Attachments:

Thread moved to Sailing chat so more can view it.
I tend to try and move threads once the date has passed, so others are able to see how active we are as a club.

Gutted we missed it. We are still technically moving home. I really can't fathom how we accrued so much junk. Another couple of days should see us right.
Great pictures, and good to see so many boats took part. Well done Huw! Can't wait to get all the responsibility stuff out the way and start cruising again - we are well down on last year.
