Yesterday, Tony and Myself went for a jolly in the bay and the Bristol channel,
We left the yacht club about 13:15 and motored our way down to lock Number 3, with myself at the helm , with tony sorting out the various ropes, we locked in about 13:35 (according to my phone) with me guiding coresande in with tony operating the throttle, and we tied ourselves up with tony showing me some ropework, as we were coming out of the lock to go to sea, Tony at the helm, me on the forecastle as lookout I noticed the dredger coming towards our starboard bow at the rate of knots from behind the inner breakwater, quick thinking by myself shouting to tony for full astern to stop us, we were able to avoid a collison with a couple of metres to spare, dredger having engaged reverse as well, we left the confines of the outer harbour and I took control of the helm, and we proceeded to motor into the bristol channel heading towards flatholm and the rannie , it was quite windy and it was quite rough as well, with the boat lurching about everywhere, we met the Penarth minesweeper coming in just past the penarth spit buoy, myself and tony agreed it was too rough as it was testing my boat handling skills to the limit to hold her on course and keep her steady as I could, so we turned back about 1/4 mile from the rannie, and made our passage from buoy to buoy with tony teaching me about cardinal marks
we locked in about 15:45, and we had a little jaunt up the River Ely as far as the road bridge and doing a very tight turn to port to enable us to get down stream with the river helping as well,
we proceeded to make our way back into cardiff bay, and tony and myself thought It would be good fun for a high speed run, managing 6.1 knots at nearly full throttle for a bit, then we made our way back to the mooring, it took us 3 attempts to get in due to the wind, but we managed it, and we tied up and went home about 17:00 roughly,
thanks tony for a lovely day out and a bit of rough helming experience as well
