To kick off next years cruising schedule and blow off the winter cobwebs, the cruising section has organised a warm up cruise in company. This is aimed at getting the less experienced sailors in the club out of the Bay with some support, and to be a fun social for old hands. This will be on Friday 1st January – New Years Day. The objective is to lock out of Cardiff Bay and go around Flat Holm Island and return to Cardiff Bay, which is approximately a 10Nm round trip.
The plan is to lock out of the Barrage at 11:00 to take best advantage of the tide.
This is not designed to be a race (ladies please take note!); purely an experience building exercise, a bit of fun and a social event. On return meet in the club bar for drinks and chat. The bar will be open from midday until around 17:30.
We're hoping to have one or more boats wholly crewed by ladies taking part. If you're a lady with or without a boat who'd be interested, please express your interest on the forum, send a PM to 'Shevin' or speak to Sheila Parker-Brown who will be skippering one of the ladies boats. All welcome regardless of age or experience (though spaces may be limited if there is an unexpectedly large amount of interest from ladies without boats).
As always use the Club’s Internet Forum (see below) if you need crew or would like to crew, whether you are Male or Female, or for any questions. Please note that you need to be logged on to read the Cruising Announcement section of the Forum.
As always Motor Boats are also very welcome to join us.
Departure time: - 11:00 in the lock. Distance: - 10 Nm approx (from/to Outer Wrach Buoy - just outside the barrage).
Tide - Avonmouth (01/01/2010). Time (GMT). Height (M). 0714 13.3 1406 1.4 1944 13.3
Tide - Cardiff (01/01/2010). Time (GMT). Height (M). 0701 12.3 1329 1.4 1932 12.2
It is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the skipper to decide whether to enter or continue participating in this event, especially with regard to prevailing and forecast weather conditions. Please also ensure your vessel and it’s equipment is in a sound and seaworthy condition and that you and your crew are suitably experienced, properly prepared and clothed for adverse weather as required.

Just to say that I will only be skippering if Alana is one of the ladies boats! So far I know that Angie & Louise want to do a ladies boat.

Huw, is there a "Plan B" should the weather/winds be anything like we've been experienceing lately? Karen, as far as I know at the moment, there are 3 ladies who are sailing, and don't know which boat it will be yet. So there should be room for one more, but any more than that on one boat will really be too many. Will see how it all goes nearer the time. Sheila

I guess plan 'B' will be to turn back (if we start at all) as soon as we each feel we're close to being 'out of our depth' - a decision for each skipper.
Assuming the wind is from the SW or W the Penarth sea front is usually quite sheltered, so we can go for a sail and see what it's like upon clearing Lavernock Point. If it's really hairy there's always a the option of a sail in the Bay, but the whole point is to get out if we can.
Last year my weather prediction was more or less spot on - so I'll have another crack at it:-
I reckon
SW 3-4, Slight or Moderate, Mainly Fair, Moderate or good.
Round Flat Holm inside 2 1/4 hours for every boat over 28'!
Anyone else want to try? We might have to have some sort of competition!

Gwennan could be there, if there is enough sober crew available! and they are not distracted by warmer indoor environments. Definitely Maybe !

Your forecast sounds like it could be quite nice. Could you arrange for sun and temperature up into the mid to high teens minimum too?

I think that's down to each individual skipper to do his/her own passage plan - or not - don't you?

Rob, Please clarify something - do you sometimes work as a qualified forecaster for Netweather? assist with the forecasts in some other way for Netweather?, or do you just occasionally comment on their forums? Or just look at their site sometimes?

Netweather is a online only weather website, I'm a fully paid up member and I occasionaly help with the storm forecasts by tracking the storms on the meto precip radar and strike sites and predicting the track etc only done it once or twice now but will be doing it more soon I can get charts etc if need be for you guys, including synoptic charts as the weather has been a hobby of mine

This is my first time on the forum so please bear with me. We have a 25ft motorsailer and would like to take part in this event probably under power rather than sail. ( weather permitting ) Do we need to register or just turn up on the day we have little experience and would be happy to just follow the rest of you.

Hi - i'm interested in doing this, but it would be my first time out of the bay in my Hunter 19.
Is there any minimum requirement for gear (safety in particular). I have handheld radio, lifejackets, harness, safety lines - but no GPS or nav lights at all - still doing the boat up - she's totally sound and seaworthy, just basic! I will have charts by then....but was hoping that a cruise with other memebers would be a good start to gettng out of the bay.
Anyone want to crew?

Would it be a good idea for people to meet up, say at the flag pole, around 10.00 ish to see who as crew can be matched up to those wanting crew, or just have spare space for another on board?

We are hoping to be there in time to meet at the flag pole, do we need to wear red carnations or carry a copy of the Daily Telegraph? It will be great to see a few of the smaller boats out there. There should be enough boats around to make sure everyone is OK. See you all there. Allan PS, please don't shout!

Weather may have tidied up a bit by then. We'll be at the flagpole for ten. Hope you all had a good Christmas. My mother-in law gave me a loose-leaf Reed's almanac for next year, as usual. That's a proper Christmas present. See you there, Paul

Shunter/Shindig, There's no need to register, just turn up on the day. The main purpose of this trip is to get the less experienced members out of the Bay with some more experienced crew's around to provide advice and a bit of support. There is no official equipment list, though it is up to each skipper to satisfy himself that he/she is adequately prepared as is the boat and crew. I would say, if it helps, that anyone competent with a chart/compass would not 'need' a GPS though they are a nice to have. Basic has worked for hundreds of years!! Meeting at the flag pole (just outside the club changing room door) to check for available crew at 10:00 seems like a perfectly good idea. So 10:00 at the flag pole or if you prefer or have crew sorted 11:00 in the lock (I realise meeting up can be a pain for some - particularly those moored on the trots). In the mean time if you wish to crew a message on here may help unite you with a boat.

Our pre-arranged crew have cried off so we've room for two on Enigma.
Soup, tea etc provided but we've only one spare lifejacket so preferably BYO.
