to those brave souls who tested themselves by doing the Yachtmaster practical exam last weekend.
If you get a chance, let us know how it went, what they look for etc.

Indeed, congratulations to you all. I heard a little about it today from Nigel. He said he would recommend it to anyone!

CONGRATULATIONS to Andy Wills and Allan Fawcus on passing The Yachtmaster Offshore Exam and to Peter Borthwick and Nigel Burgess on passing The Yachtmaster Coastal Exam. For those of you that would like to follow in their footsteps I would like to remind you all that The C.Y.C. is running a course for the R.Y.A. Dayskipper Certificate very shortly. Brian King Commodore.

Rob, I concur with Sheila. I did my comp crew, day skipper practical as well as radio course with Tiger Bay training and they have always been very professional, friendly and have a lovely boat to sail on (A Bavaria 37). They are a little pricey but worth it in my opinion.

Matt, I think I better save up for it, but I need to run my night hours up though.

Karen Yes you can. I did my Day Skipper practical through Sailtime who contracted an instructor called Chris Nicholson (chrisnicol2@hotmail.com and 07730600357) who lives across the channel near Burnham on Sea. I would recommend him highly.

Karen, I am sure you can do own boat Day Skipper with Tiger Bay training too. Vikingsmb, you do not need night hours for Day Skipper, perhaps the word Day has something to do with it.

The pre-course experience suggested for Day Skipper does include 4 hours night sailing

The Day Skipper practical I did was a 5 day practical course, included 3 nights onboard and had a night sailing section which was probably about 4 hours. It was very thorough, rewarding and exhausting.
I have a friend who did his Day Skipper in Portugal (because it was cheaper) and pretty much spent the whole time drinking and sunbathing. At the end he was awarded his Day Skipper which was what he needed to charter a boat on holiday.
I also know someone else who did a 3 day Competent Crew course and was awarded a Day Skipper qualification at the end. Let's just say he did it in Wales but not in South Wales.
So it seems that if you want to cut corners you can but it is really the full 5 day experience that you will benefit the most from rather then the paper qualification at the end.

I take it back. In fact the suggested minimum pre-course requirement is 5 days sea time, 100 hours 4 night hours. I don't think I had 4 night hours when I did mine. A woman on my course spent the whole time being sea sick, never cooked once, did no washing up or cleaning, and she got hers too!

hello All. been out of touch for a bit, so only just picked up on this.
..and for the record I got Yachtmaster OFFSHORE too - or at least I think I did! - anybody else got a certificate yet?
Re. those considering Dayskipper. I would advise against just doing the exam at this stage and definitely recommend a course, preferably on a larger boat than you might be used to and probably with more and better gear and equipment than you are used to - you'll learn more! You will also learn more on a larger boat because there will probably be more people on it, providing a greater variety of opinions and ideas - always useful. I did mine 4 years ago and did an intensive theory course followed immediately by the practical which certainly worked for me. Roger Nassey (I think that's how he spells it) was the instructor. I thought he was easy going and very fair. I think he's a member of CBYC so you could try and contact him there?
Oh, and don't go swanning off to the sun to do it either! do it here in the Bristol Channel! You'll learn your tides properly and then be ready for anywhere in the world!
regards to all, Peter
