Anyone have any plans for the Bank holiday weekend? I still hope to go to Burry port at some point but I'm open to other suggestions. A lot will, obviously, depend on weather. Allan

LUNDY!!!! Which has so far eluded me. If I don't get there this year I'll throw my dolls out of the pram!!!
I'm a bit hesitant about Burry Port. Not about the approach, but my pilot book says the marina there is dredged to 1.5 metres and my draught is 1.46!!! However Peter Cumberlidge has been known to be wrong!

It looks like we have two lows to put up with before the weekend. Although it is too early to tell, we may have a high, heading up from the Azores for the weekend. If the weather out west looks dodgy (or I drink too much on Thursday) plan B is to head east just before low tide. Then maybe Lydney or anywhere else that is sheltered. Allan

I'll now have to put plans for the bank holiday on hold and play it by ear as my engine is still in bits. It was tweaked last weekend and already an improvement in performance achieved, but then dismantled to finish the job with the extremely welcome help of Huw and Les (owner of Moth, from Weston, a frequent visitor to CYC) who's knowledge of the 1GM10 turns out to be extensive. Many thanks to both of you for your help, but we simply ran out of time. I am hoping to get it put back together on Friday, but can't be sure if it will be ready in time for Sat. Especially if an early start is on the cards! I might end up treating Sun/Mon as an ordinary weekend and head for somewhere closer to home.
Yes Martyn, Lundy is on my charts :-) They extend down the Devon coast and covered the area when we went to Appledore/Instow. Prior to the Easter trip I had only been as far as Oxwich Bay on the Welsh side, and was quite surpised when they ran out at Tenby! I was also surprised to discover that Tenby is actually slightly further West than Lundy.
Hopefully will be at the club on Thurs and Friday nights and will know more then. Well, on Friday night anyway.
Julian.

The engine is smokey and lacks power, but still starts first prod of the button every time. We discovered that the valve timing was way, way out. Far too big a gap, meaning that the exhaust valve wasn't opening enough. Unfortunately none of us knew what the clearance should be - and we didn't have a feeler guage anyway, but Huw guessed at it and that gave an immediate improvement in performance, but not smokiness.
At the moment the fuel line is disconnected and the fuel injector half out. It needs a lot of persuasion to shift! We only managed to get it to start moving by loosening the nuts and running the engine so that compression/firing would push the injector up. Even then it wouldn't move until the engine was in gear and under load.
On friday I hope to get the injector out completely and take it to be cleaned before replacing. Also get a feeler guage and set the valve timing properly. Also the water pump is leaking. This won't have any effect on power, but it is certainly something which needs fixing. A regular occurence on 1GM10 engines, apparently. Also I accidently touched the back of the alternator with the spanner when trying to undo the nuts on the injector and got rather violent sparks. Since then the charge light hasn't gone out completely so I may have blown the blocking diode. Got to take that in to an electrical place to be checked over now on top of everything else!!!
So... considering I have to take things apart, then run around trying to get the parts (bearing in mind that I don't know Cardiff and so have no idea where I am going!) then rebuild everything I don't know if this will all be finished on Friday..... Just have to see how far I get and take the bank holiday from there. In my experience everything takes longer than expected, so as I said, I may end up finishing up on Sat and treating Sun/Mon as a normal weekend.
Just hope you guys enjoy your sailing while I'm getting covered in oil!!
Julian.

Thanks for all the best wishes and offers of help. It is refreshing to know that there is so much support from fellow club members.
Well, it never rains... it pours! The fuse on the bilge pump has blown and the manual pump is really hard to operate. There is oil from the engine in the bilge which has probably attracted dirt, turned into gunge and blocked the pumps. Something else that needs doing!
Also... the is some plastic buzz strip (designed to scare away the seagulls) wrapped round the propeller.........!!! Looks like I'll be going for a swim too!
I think I've given up hope of going anywhere this bank holiday!!!
Julian.

Julian, Sorry to hear about your problems, look on the bright side. when you have sorted the engine it should be OK for the rest of the year. I've just been having another look at the weather and it seems to me that it is a very difficult weekend to predict. The high which looked like it was going to influence the weather has not come up as far as they thought. There are fronts heading this way that could make it a bit gusty. At present it looks like I may be heading up to somewhere like Thornbury, which would be a first for me. Allan

That's what caught us out last weekend, Allan. The forecasts varied from about force 4 to 7/8, a few times. The High strengthened on the Saturday, giving light winds and beautiful blue skies, then dropped away Southwards Saturday night giving near gales.
Very, very frustrating when passage planning.

Yes, my guess would be that this weekend will have a full range of wind speeds. My speculation would be from 3 or 4 knots on Sunday night/Monday morning to 20-25 knots on Saturday night/Sunday morning. (For Julian 6 to 32 knots!). With the difficulty in predicting the weather and the wind direction, west and southwest, I think Burryport will have to wait. Allan

Well, my prediction of wind speed ranges was not far out. Bright Flyer and Chausey left on the 1000hr lock Saturday and turned left up the channel under genoas only, passing Portishead after a bit more than 2 hours. The wind was about 15-20kts behind us. As we went under the second Severn crossing we were hit by a squall which had rain and wind of 30-35kts. With a SOG of well over 10kts and restricted visibility though the Shoots makes for an interesting sail! Things had calmed down by the time we went under the old bridge and headed over to the sand banks to Thornbury. When we arrived, there was nowhere near enough water, so we anchored off and had lunch. The combination of soft sand and 15-20kts of wind made it difficult to get my anchor up, so I followed Bright Flyer into the pill and onto the pontoon. We joined some of the TSC members in the bar for a quick pint and hot dogs. The boats settled nicely into the mud and I slept well after coming back fron the pub at the end of the drive. In the morning I had a nice walk into Thornbury and back, which took a couple of hours. We left the pontoon at 1700hrs for the short sail up to Lyney where the harbourmaster had said he would open the lock gates for our arrival at 1800hrs. After tying up and enjoying a glass of wine I set off for a walk to Lyney and was picked up by a couple of yacht club members and given a lift to Tescos. On the walk back I had a sneeky look around a yard full of old trains. It was good to see all of the interesting boats in the canal above the inner lock. The harbour was beautiful and quite, a perfect place to sit and chat over a glass or two of wine. The harbourmaster turned up as promised at 0600hrs to drop the harbour water level for our departure just before 0700hrs. We then had to motor down to the bridges, as the wind was right on the nose. As we left the Shoots the wind was just right for a beat down toward Avonmouth at over 6kts all the way, under small genny and with a reef in the main. Both boats tacked down between Portishead and Clevedon before heading over toward Wales. The only real disappointment was that the wind dropped and we had to motor the last bit, in time for the 1245hrs lock-in. A few pints in the club bar just finished off the trip nicely! Next is the regatta, then off to Lydney again for their festival. I would definitely recommend trips to both Thornbury and Lydney. Just try turning left. Allan

Interesting trip Allan, never thought about Thornbury before. We had a picnic in Lydney 2 weeks ago on the way to Gloucester, its really pretty isn't it. The Dean Forest railway is not far from there, I guess you were looking at the yard where they tinker with the old british rail trains they bought.
