quote] I'd better own up to all my sailing sins this weekend before someone else beats me to it - The above photo was taken whilst a number of us were tied up near the Portishead lock, awaiting a green light to enter (Peter!!!). Shortly after the photo was taken the lights turned to green, and I ordered the crew to slip the lines, and went to motor away - quickly realising that I had shut off the engine during our extended wait! I'd forgotten about that!

That makes feel very much better. I was convinced we could just about cut the corner right until the moment we felt the keels touch bottom - the smartist we've ever gone about! But that was my mistake, I'm sure Huw just wanted to check his antifoul! Lovely w/end.

Brill Trip. Wind and weather perfect for a very enjoyable sail bothways. Wonderful friendly Hospitality & good food, not forgetting the cheap bar prices. The night was topped off with a free ride back to our beds. Thanks to all concerned in both clubs. My girls did me proud. Looking forward to the next trip

Not much to add, lovely photos from everyone. Many thanks to everyone that came to our rescue. Brilliant pics Huw, the true nature of the Bristol Channel tidal range is really brought home to you when you see those sand banks. Look forward to more cruising in company.

Well, we have not much more to add. I don't think I want to relive those harrowing moments stuck outside of Portishead sailing like mad against the tide the only progress we were making was up toward the Severn Bridge with yet another huge ship bearing down on us and sounding it's horn and Vince shouting at me to keep my course and not bleeping stall! It was seriously scary.
And then my newest hero(s) Allan & Tony on Chausey came to rescue us!
Our thanks to all who helped with the engine on Sunday, and huge thanks to Allan for towing us through the locks.
I think along with the Blue Book Challenge trophy we should also have some kind of award at the end of the year for rescue services!

A great trip and good to see so many boats out for a club cruise. Plenty of towing practise for Tony and I. Thanks to all involved in the planning and organisation. Allan

We locked out at 2.45pm on Saturday and had a lovely trip up in the sunshine. Nice to get the sunglasses out! It was my crews first passage so was glad that the rough seas that were promised came to nothing. A few large ships passed us once we reached the English side which added some more interest to the trip and were greeted by Istar with engine trouble upon rounding the corner to Portishead marina so helped them in. I think we must have locked in at about 6-6.30pm and proceeded to go to the office to pay but they were a bit busy. We were intending to go back to the boat to get changed and freshen up but transport was there ready to take us to Portishead Yacht Club so we went there kindly driven by Derek who gave us some deail on the clubs history. We went in the same clothes we sailed in so were a bit smelly. Afer a lovely meal laid on by the club and a few beers we were driven back about 11pm after a lovely night in great company. The location of the club on the river Avon is an excellent picturesque place and didn't realise it was shared between Portishead and Pill as I've passed it on the trip up to Bristol many times.
Most of the boats were locking out at 10am but as Sunbeam is so small we decided to get a head start and booked in for the 9.30am lock with Katy and 2 fishing boats. Another great sail back with a fresh breeze at the start on the English side going down to hardly a whisper when approaching Penarth. It was a bit cloudy coming back and my crew was complaining of the cold. She made cups of tea and got the duvet out and laid under it in the cockpit. I will have to buy her some thermals and warmer sailing gear when I have some dough. Luckily we missed a heavy rain cloud to the SW that was threatening. Most boats seemed to lock in to Cardiff at the same time so even though we were slow we were only 30 mins behind the other boats.
Nice photos Julian, much appreciated. As Allan said thank you to all who organised the event. Great first passage of the year!

Sorry for the delay in adding my comments as the only motorboater on the trip - singlehanded - on my first time out in the channel - but I've had 2 weeks of hard labour earning back the brownie points I lost being on a club cruise on Mothers Day, and when making the choice of whether to take the auxilliary outboard or Mrs Habso, clearly selecting 1) the most useful in case of emergency and 2) the quieter of the two. I locked out with Cassandra and followed in her footsteps to the outer wrach; thanks for showing me the way guys, then just cruised gently, more or less making a bee-line for Portishead. There was a little incident on the way up, getting caught out by the sudden appearance of the middle grounds and escaping their clutches with only 6 inches of depth under Star by rather dangerously and sphincter tighteningly taking some serious broadside waves under full power. My coffee and sandwiches were all over the cockpit floor, but fortunately I had not previously consumed them. I did mention to Huw how I had been caught out and he told me that actually it is possible to stop on the middle grounds and have a BBQ. He didn't mention to me that that was what he was planning on the way back, however, and I was surprised that he didn't invite me. Its true that mobos really are welcome, there was the expected friendly banter and mickey taking from the yotties, but no more than they did with other yotties. Thanks to all, it was a great trip and I look forward to cruising with you again.

Just to wind this up, I sent an email to Lynn Lewis at PCC to thank her again on behalf of the club, she said she would pass it on to the committee. Ray Perriam said he was going to write but I don't know if he did.

Sorry for the delay in posting this photo of Camelot (just before they were grounded!) Many thanks to all who organised this trip. Also special thanks to Stephen (that's Uncle Steve to everyone else) and Jackie for their hospitality on Coracle.
