Its a good idea to have created a blog, reminds me of the one Graham from CBYC has done, that way people not only from CYC can see your adventures in one place rather than bits and bobs all over the place.
Will have to check he blog frequently, thanks for putting this up. Happy sailing, looks a lovely area.
Matt.

Thanks, Matt. When Louise and I first became interested in sailing about 18 months back, we read loads of these. OK, it's not anywhere tropical and exciting, but it still may prove interesting or informative (to a small degree) to someone.
BTW, I've linked to Graham's site (Banjo blog) from mine, if anyone is interested.

For anyone who doesn't know, Louise and I are crewing for a friend on a Transatlantiic trip, Pembroke to Barbados, starting the week after next. I'll update the blog when possible, and post on the forum, but in th eabscence of any news, the ship's blog should be updated, with positions at least. blog.mailasail.com/chelone/1

Cheers, Steve. I may struggle as I don't know what Internet access we'll have. Should be some tales and piccies to show when we get back though, hopefully early December.

Great write up and photos, well done.
I understand what you mean about Scotland and the Northern Isles... I went to Shetland for a party and moved to live up there for 5 years! A time of my life I will never forget...

I've only just now got round to reading your blog Martin. Looks fab, but not for me, don't fancy being down there with the fishes! I think you might already be under way for USA. Stay safe and we look forward to hearing more from you in due course.

Hi Sheila. Very busy getting the boat ready. Launched last week, Louise and Suzie filled her with food today, whilst I worked with the skipper on electronics, charting, MF radios, AIS etc.
Friday morning is a possibility for leaving, but next Tuesday looks bad in South Biscay, so......maybe.

Well, don't forget to let us know when you are setting off, by text or email before you get out of range! And I was thinking of poor Tigger last night, how is he taking it?

3.15 Friday afternoon 26th October. Louise has just phoned to say that they are just off to get the fresh food then they are leaving right away. Heading straight down to the Canaries, the trip should take about 4 or 5 days. We wish them a safe passage.

Arrived La Corunna Northern Spain last night. Tried to get around the corner to West coast at Bayonne but 25 knot headwinds and big seas and we turned back. Biscay bouncy at the top, 30 knots off Ushant and water streaming into the cockpit on night watches, but I know now what a bluewater boat does. Long keel, she can carry more sail later and fly along nice and steady in a blow.
After that, three days of F3, lovely. AIS a must. Spoke to Oceana on radio.
Absolutely loving it. Will update blog with a longer account when I can. Best wishes to all at CYC.
M.

L&M, great news, glad your safe and happy. I've just read your blog, sounds like a great trip so far. Chelone sounds like the right boat for the job, I'm interested to hear your views on AIS. Do you think it is important to transmit or would just a receiver be OK? Allan

Cheers everyone. yes, chelone is the business. Handled f7 gusting 8 in Biscay with some comfort. 16 tonnes so easy motion. Allan, aid receive is a must. Transmit very reassuring. It was nice to call skippers possibly on collision course and be told they could see lights, radar and had us on ais.

If you look at www.marinetraffic.com/ais/ and put Chelone into the vessel box on the left you can follow their progress. I just looked and they are about 100Nm north of Lisbon. Allan

Slightly off topic but if you look at Marinetraffic AIS live data for Barry at www.marinetraffic.com/ais/default.aspx?level0=100 and also Shipfinder AIS data for the area off Barry at http://www.http://shipfinder.co/ , right now, you will see different data. MarineTraffic shows 2 tankers anchored off Llantwit Major and Shipfinder shows one. They also show different names for the tanker called Jongleur (by MarineTraffic) and only known by its MMSI by Shipfinder. Makes you wonder how accurate the information is and who has the most accurate information? Marinetraffic appears to be better. I only noticed this when searching for Chelone on Shipfinder which couldn't find it. MarineTraffic and its APP find it without any issue.

In the past I have tried both, Marinetraffic seems best but it is only for interest at home. I went to Clovelly once and saw a ship off Lundy, my phone said it was moving at 10-15kts. Every time I looked at it over about 10 days, it was still shown in the same place. Some ships don't even show up on the AIS I have on Chausey. Naval vessels often don't transmit. Net based AIS and phone APPs are fine for stuff like looking for Louise and Martin. Direct, VHF, AIS is a useful addition on the boat BUT it is only a help. Relying on it is just another way of risking an EAI (Electronically Assisted Incident). Allan

Out of interest, www.marinetraffic.com and www.shipfinder.co as well as the ShipFinder APP do not show Chelone or can find her. However, the MarineTraffic APP can if you search for Chelone find her and shows her track ending at the port of Cascais near Estoril and Lisbon at 5:16am today. Presumably their AIS is now off and is therefore not currently transmitting.

Martin Ishtar, if you read this. Looking at your photo of you enjoying a nice cup of coffee just be careful about leaving stuff very visible. Anyone could come along and pick stuff up off the table.

Hi Martin and Louise. We have been following your exciting voyage and see that you are probably at Cascais, sorry the weather here in Portugal is being so very unforgiving! We are down the other end in Tavira, rain coming down in sheets and blowing like mad. Hope to be able to continue to watch your progress. Enjoy your adventure and above all stay safe. Yep, arrived Cascais 5am today. On the way in, 5 knots of wind became 38knots in 5 mins, and us with full sail. Tired. Update blog soon, maybe pictures.

Ooh, Cascais is lovely! I bought some fab shoes and beautiful Atlantis Crystal there once. If you've got a good day there, get the train in to Lisbon, it's not too far and a lovely run along the coast/river. Don't forget to buy some Pasteis de natas (pl) (pastel de nata sing), like little custard tarts but much nicer! They'll keep you going on board for a bit.
