Took the boat out yesterday hour b4 low tide got to my mark mid Cardiff area put the pick down then found out I didn't bring any squid it was razor fish but I had rag and blacks so started fishing, Very quiet for first hour then the bites started a few 2-3lbs put them back then they started to get bigger but all on rag nothing touched the razor and only had 1 on blacks turned into a good day ended up with 15 codling 10 keepers 3.1/2 to 4.1/2 but no big ones, Where are the big ones this year had a few doubles b4 xmas but all small stuff now but i'm not grumbling it was a good day out, (Still back in time to watch the match) on the radio there was a lot of boats saying only single fish caught if any.
Got a few photos on the phone when I get chance will put them up but they are only codling lol

Hi Nye, sounds great, me and some friends are hoping to take the boat out for our first fishing attempt this wednesday over low water so its good to know theres still some cod out there. Never fished from a boat before got any tips? Are bait cocktails working or single baits being favoured at the moment?
Thanks!

Who do you use for weather, I use xcweather set for Penarth it's showing 14-20mph at 9am and 13-18mph at 12 noon 6 degrees sw so it all depends where you go ?? but best of luck

i was using windguru which has gone up a bit to 12/3 gusting 20 sw moving round to ssw since last looking but we'll see how it goes we were going to stay around the penarth pier/cardiff mid buoy area would you recommend anywhere else instead with the chance of the wind moving round further south/increasing in strength?
We were thinking that hanging round fairly close would mean if it gets uncomfortable we can run for the lock quite easily but at the same time if conditions suggest that the area will be a waste of time or uncomfortable then itd be good to know if you think there would be a better spot for the conditions bearing in mind we are so inexperienced.

Sorry to say but imo when it got any south wind we haven't got any calm areas up our way, also remember this week are big tides, west wind you can get some shelter under Penarth but with a 13.3 tide not a lot at low water, on the ebb it will be a bit bumpy until the flood, don't forget to post your days catch might get more members on the forum because it seems just the same people all the time, GOOD LUCK

Zeus just something to keep in mind if you do make a run for home because of bad weather just make sure there is enough water in the approach channel to the locks not knowing your draft can be tricky I have come in with about 3ft but that pull the mud through your engine, But that's only on big tides at bottom water, Check with barrage control sometimes they tell you to wait an hour or so because of silting up, hope that helps

Hi Nye,
Yeah of course, we've already hit a silt bank in the dredged channel when there shouldve ample water for us to get in so were a bit weary any time around low water, we're quite deep so we always have to keep an eye out at low water and we usually leave it an hour after low just to be on the safe side!

Hi Sheila yes changed my boat sept last year never got around to change my forum name, That's why linda and myself are looking forward to going away this year with the cruisers and on our own down west, It would be a shame not to do some fishing while we are away lol

Well then, if you are thinking of doing some cruising around the Bristol Channel, have you invested in a Cruising Guide aka Blue Book, on sale at the bar price £8.00! Very useful
