Lovely gentle trip down from Cadiz. Left at 1600 yesterday and took it really slowly, so we did the straits in daylight. Gibraltar harbour is very busy with large commercial traffic. We're tucked up by the airport, hoping to avoid the next little blow. Allan

Nice to hear from you Allan, I hope the rest of your trip goes well. You must be doing a fair bit of plane spotting where you are at the moment. We are all following your progress intently. Good Luck, Brian King.

I never knew that the bit just to the east of Gibraltar is called The Alboran Sea. In fact I'd never heard of it!

The cake was sweet! Probably the sweetest thing I've ever eaten! Glad to hear Vince is home safe, the adventure continues tomorrow. We plan to head east from Europa point and see how far we can get.

Just sent the weather for the next week. It looks fairly benign, they may have to operate the iron sail. Their plan is to stay on the islands side, rather than the North African side. Morocco is still relatively safe to visit, but www.noonsite.com/ recommends staying away from Algeria, except in emergencies. As an aside, btw, Paschall stayed with Louise and I for a couple of days last week. He is, in his own words, 'Grand'. Living on a farm in Kilkenny at the moment.

That's a useful site, Sheila. They are gheading for Cagliari, Sardinia for a few days break. The forecast I've been sending them has been 10-15kts, but they've been seeing stronger winds than that, and are feeling a bit battered. None of the weather sites I use show anything like 20kts. Sent them the Newcastle football scores, and the rugby.....

I'm hoping they are in Cagliari now. I had a message last night about 21:00, saying they were not using the tracker because of lightening. Said they were hoping to head into port at first light this morning.

I've just noticed that they are still at sea. Not quite sure why that is. I'll report later if I hear any news.

Still not there yet, looks like they've still got about 50 miles to go. It seems they have only been making just over 2 knots ph for the last 4 hours plus. I notice that the highest recorded speed of the whole trip was 14.484 km/h (7.82 knots) at 7.46pm on last Saturday evening. I don't know how well the tracker works as far as recording speed goes, but it always seem s to read much the same.

Nice to see the "A" team has made it to Cagliari Well done Alan and Allan. I spent some time in Sardinia with two former members who moved home there. Sadly one of them is no longer with us. However it is an interesting island but very barren in parts. Rest up well men. Hope to have an update from you soon. Brian King

Arrived here in Cagliari this morning. The marina is a bit basic but OK. We slowed down yesterday as we didn't fancy arriving in the dark. The wind was perfect for 5 days, then went scrappy. We had two nights of thunderstorms, which are not my favourite weather! Off for a look around before we decide how long to stay. Alan

We are now in Palermo on a pontoon run by Giovanni. We negotiated down to 70euro for two nights. After a nice walk and good meal we had an early night. The trip from Cagliari was very good, not quite enough wind but we only needed the desiel powered sail for a short time. We will be checking the weather for departure on Tuesday. Allan

Been following your progress very closely. Did you know that the maximum speed the tracker has recorded in the entire trip was 14.484 km/h at 7.46pm on 8th November. Which is 7.82 knots. The next highest was yesterday at 12.55 pm when it recorded 12.875 km/h. You must have been getting a bit of a wiggle on knowing that you would soon be in harbour! Just a bit of trivia for you! I said I was following you closely!

Spent some time on Skype this morning. I could see a crusty blob with what looked like hair on the bottom and none on top, so I think that must have been Allan! They are in good spirits, eating breakfast as we spoke. Straits of Messina next, so I sent them some pilotage info, which I'm sure they already have. In case you are interested, it runs in a very similar way to Ramsey Sound - a main North/South going current with back eddies near land on both sides. www.morganasailing.com/home_page_english/winds___currents/00000204_The_Strait_of_Messina.htmlWhen Louise and I were in that area in 2007, Stromboli erupted, although we saw and felt nothing. I tried to wind them up by saying both Etna and Stromboli could go off, but they were just laughing. M.

I'm sure it was the Strombolis I had last night that gave me a headache! It could have been seeing Martin too early in the morning. Louise has so much to put up with! Allan

Hi Martin, Thanks for the link and update. The lads are doing really well - what an achievement . Good to hear they haven't lost their sense of humour. Looks similar to sailing in the Bristol Channel with the so called “Bastardo currents " ---- the exception being that the waters is a bit cleaner where they are

Had this message from the boys today. Heading for Kalamata on the Greek mainland then possibly straight over to Cyprus. May think of a stop on one of the islands, we'll see how it goes.

Shippinut, do you have a link for the webcam? We had a fantastic trip over from Sicily. Very little motoring until this morning. This afternoon was incredibly hot, I really could get used to this! I found out yesterday my brother and his wife went through the Messina straits a few hours after us. They are on the Queen Elizabeth heading for Venice. How the other half live! I wouldn't swap though. Allan
