As lots of people already know, John Searle and I hope to take his Moody 31 "Elba" around the Atlantic. I hope to add some comments on here as we go, when wifi allows. In the meantime, our position can be tracked here:- share.delorme.com/JohnSearle[frame]https://share.delorme.com/JohnSearle[/frame] Allan Edit - I've modified this post to create a link to the chart, and (hopefully) display it here. Hope that works. Admin.

Allan mentioned getting to Brest and then seeing what the weather does. There's a nasty low out there for the end of the week, but the Grib files show that they could miss it if they do push on Southwards quickly.

Allan, Good to hear you are on your way. Forget the Red Bull - I hope you found your thermals. It must be bitter. Chart is an excellent idea, gives us a good indication of how you are progressing. Be careful and enjoy the experience. Cheers Jacky & Steve

Looking at their current position, they should be well South of the coming depression. They have enough Westing to weather Cape Finisterre, too, I'd guess. Something we didn't manage. Looking very good so far, around 200 miles in their first 36 hours - 120 miles a day, above Allan's guess of 100.

That's a good mileage to start with. ------Their speed should pick up with time Depending on how quick their John Smiths cargo gets used & you can get tablets for the depression so that should help them on their way Always good for morale and spirits to have a good start though. Just hope they get out of the cold to sit back and soak up a bit of warmth soon especially at their age. It seems a long way to go to stop people pulling your leg about the Rugby result. Allan said he hoped everyone will have forgotten by time he gets back.

I've just done their first weather request. Allan sends me a text via satphone, and I give them wind speed and direction based on their current position. I give them 12h, 24h, 36h and 48h at 100 miles to the South, SW and West of where they are, and 60h, 72h winds for 200 miles, S, SW and W.
Fantastic Easterli/NorthEasterlies at 15-20 knots today and tomorrow, swinging around to the SW as the approach Cape Finnisterre on Thursday/Friday. 15-20 knots on the nose!

30 knots from the SSW now forecast for Finisterre On THursday night. You can see from the chart they've changed direction. Looks like La Corunna is on the cards - they seem to be having the same luck we had in rounding that cape.

They seem to be doing really well. If they do stop at La Corunna that seems to be a brilliant first leg in their adventure The chart is a good aid to help put the "Moody old blokes" achievements into perspective.

It will be really strange if the get the same weather and end up in the same marina as us. Good run though. All the more with just the two of them.

So, the story so far.
Saturday 22nd, left Galmton for Dartmouth, 2.5Nm sucess.
Sunday 23rd, left Dartmouth quay 0730 wind ENE 5 to 6 forcast. 143 miles under half genoa only. Wind speeds 20 - 40 knots.
Monday 24th, turned left off Ushant and pointed the front off the tip of north west Spain. 120+ miles with rolled genoa and two reefs.
Tuesday 25th, Decided to start the engine for some charging. After a couple of minutes it stopped. Lots of head scratching and taking off pipes and things. We decided the 20 odd litres of water in the fuel tank may have been part of the problem. This was pumped out and the system cleaned. Unfortunatly changing a filter in a bit of a sea is not easy and John managed to cross thread it. We could run the engine but with fuel leaking at 5-6 litres an hour.
Wednesday 26th, We shut down all the electrics and sailed on the compassall day, having decied to head for La Coruna. The wind went around more to the east and kicked up a bit as we approached the Spainish coast. It took both of to sail so from early evening to the following morning we were both on deck.
Thursday 27th, once we were in the lee of the land off La Coruna we could settle down for our entry. For me, a beautiful arrival, calm seas, sun nearly shining and all was peaceful. For John, sat down below catching diesel in a tray and putting into empty water containers with toilet paper stuffed into his ears due to the noise. we arrived 0900 and went to try to find the spares we needed. Easter in Spain starts Thurday and everything is closed until Saturday, when a few non boaty thing open. After a good meal and some wine we realised we had been awake for a day and a half so went bed about 0100.
Friday 28th, I woke up at the crack of 13-30 and we tidied the boat in readiness for fitting the parts when the shops open. Not much else to do but find somewhere for beer and food.
Saturday 29th today. After hailing a cab to go hunting for the filter, the driver turned out to be from Camden town. He helped us get what we needed and the boat is now back up and running. Now this is up to date, I will be checking the weather to see if we can leave in the morning. Allan

Text from Allan last night saying they were leaving this morning, and they have now done so. Plan is to get well West of Finisterre and then head straight for the Canaries. With a couple of days of 20kt Westerlies and tehn SWerlies, they will have things 'lumpy'.
Best of luck lads!

Right, where do I start? As those who a following the tracker will know, we left La Coruna 31st March and sailed/motored around Cape Finisterre. As we continued our course we had all sorts of weather, which is to be expected. Unfortunately too much of it meant we had to motor rather than sail. Given the angle we could sail we planned to head into Nazare but the wind slowly backed and we found ourselves off Figuiero da Foz so decided entry would be a good idea. Please note, not all decisions are correct! Heading in after trying to check if the port entrance was opened I decided no answer was good enough. Entry was interesting! The swell, that had been there causing no problem since we left La Coruna, started to build as the depth reduced. We had to hold on and surfed into the narrow entrance. When approaching the marina we caught an unmarked fishing net but made it safely to the marina reception pontoon. We were met there by some nice chaps in uniforms, one of which looked like "The special one", who pointed out that we broken the law and would be dealt with in the morning! This due to us entering the port while it was closed. Two and a half hours in the Maritime Police office and the Harbour Master's office this morning has sorted everything, all we need to do is fill the fuel, remove the fishing net and we can sit and wait for the entrance to open. Weather looks great after Friday. 10-20 knots from the North or NE.
